  1. Well, I mentioned in the Schaller State Fair Report thread that Penrith
Show was on this weekend, and that I and some of the family had some
entries in it. This is just a small, local show. The NSW equivalent to
the Minnesota State Fair would likely be the Sydney Royal Easter Show
(http://www.eastershow.com.au/) - I've not yet had the courage to enter
anything in that (for one thing, the entry fees are fairly hefty compared
to our little local show!) but maybe one day.

Anyway, I stopped by the show today to see how we went, and here are the
    results!

I entered a couple of pieces of needlework, but didn't place at all with
those this year - I didn't expect to as they were a bit rushed. Trying to
enter things each year though, as if entries dwindle away, the sections
    close.

    Baking - 4 entries, 4 placings.

    Scones(any variety other than white) - I entered pumpkin scones. I wasn't
entirely happy with them, but didn't have time to make another batch.
Shouldn't have worried as it turns out - I got a 1st for these. All the
others in the class appeared to be fruit scones of various sorts
    (sultana, date)

    Shortbread - 1st

Banana Cake - 2nd (got a 2nd for this last year, too - same person came
    first again)

Boiled Fruitcake - 3rd (got a 2nd for this last year, so either I've
slipped or the competition's improved <g>. For those in countries where
fruitcake is less popular, a boiled fruitcake is one where the fruit,
butter, sugar is boiled before mixing in the rest of the ingredients)

So, I can't be unhappy with those results. Now, for the really important
    ones.

My sister's boys both had some baking entries also, in the 12 years and
    under section.

    Alex (11) entered scones(white) and placed 1st

Nathan (9) entered chocolate cake (got a 1st), chocolate muffins (got a
2nd), and banana and carrot cake (unplaced).

My sister's husband decided to have a go this year

    Scones (white) - unplaced
Special Rich Fruit Cake - 2nd (this is a class where they provide a
recipe that you have to follow. This particular class is held at local
shows all over the state - each winner is eligible for Zone judging, and
the Zone winner competes at the Sydney Royal)

So, the family did pretty well over all. I'm glad the boys both got a
first. Nathan didn't place at all last year and was most disappointed -
he'll be happier this year. I need to practice that fruitcake, and hunt
down the banana cake winner and dispose of her <vbg>. I could probably
enter more than 4 lots of baking next year, if I take a day off work in
which to make them all! There are a couple of names that you see repeated
over and over on the prize cards - I figure those women probably don't
work, or else they take some time off! Most of the baking you really need
to do the day before it's due in at the earliest, if you want it to be at
    its best.

I've also got a couple of needlework projects that I wish to do, which
will hopefully be finished in time for next year's show!

Thanks, Margaret. While the boys don't bake every week (being typical
young boys, there are other things that attract them more), they do find
it enjoyable, and are certainly keen to try and win prizes at the Show.
Since they were very small, my sister has involved them in baking,
sitting them up on the counter to help stir cake mixes etc. They do all
the work themselves now, under supervision, except for putting things
into and taking them out of, a hot oven.

I would say so! I'm very happy for all of you, but especially the kids.

I hear the siren song of your banana cake. I love banana cake. I have
four dead bananas in the freezer. I think it will just remain a naughty
thought, though. I feel like [censored] today. But maybe all I need is some
banana cake to feel better. This is making my brains hurt.

What does it take to get on that fruitcake list? ;-)

I'm gonna try to get my hands on the ingredients, and bake some fruitcake
next month. I want to send some to Hag's dad, who absolutely loves the

How about posting the boiled fruitcake recipe? (it'll be a lot cheaper
than mailing me a fruitcake ;-)

    Best regards,
    Bob

    JUNE BENEFIELD'S CHERRY NUT CAKE
(I think my Mom copied this recipe from _The Houston Chronicle_)

1 pound candied cherries, cut in half (1/2 red and 1/2 green is nice)
    1 pound chopped pecans
    1 pound dates,chopped
    1/2 pound candied pineapple
    Batter:
1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
    4 eggs
    1 cup sugar
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon baking powder
(Notice that there is no butter or shortening in this cake.)

Mix chopped fruits and nuts with 1/2 cup flour. In a separate bowl,
beat eggs; add sugar, remaining flour, salt, and baking powder. Beat
slightly. Combine fruit-nut mixture with batter. Mix with hands.
(There's no other way to handle the mass says June) Bake in a tube pan
lined with two thickness of wax paper or heavy brown paper that's been
liberally greased. Bake 90 minutes at 325 degrees.

Notes: I use this recipe, but I also add chopped dried Turkish apricots,
raisins, and chopped brazil nuts. Last time I made it I also added some
diced prunes. Sweetened dried pineapple works just as well as glasé
pineapple, and it's cheaper. Baste with rum, bourbon, or brandy, and
wrap tightly in cheese cloth and heavy-duty aluminum foil.

I thought those fruitcakes came from "Claxton" in Georgia. Two different

They do. I must confess to a brain fart. Georgia "Claxton" are indeed the

Thanks, Charlie. I was confused because I know that there are several
fruitcake places in Texas, as well. I've eaten the Claxton fruitcakes and
they really are good. Received several as gifts. I think I might by them
this year, as I don't think I'll have time to make my own.

I'm posting the recipe in a separate thread. Hope you like it. There are
quite a lot of boiled fruitcake recipes, but the one I'm posting is the
only one I've used, and the one that I entered in the show. At Christmas
I actually make a normal fruitcake rather than a boiled one.

I'm posting the recipe in a separate thread - maybe you'll feel less
lazy one day and make it <g>. I don't actually make the boiled one at
Christmas time, though. I just use a standard rich fruit cake recipe for
that - one where I soak the fruit in grog for days! Last year was the
first time that I made multiple fruitcakes. Previously I've made one,
and taken it into work (where it disappears quite quickly). Last year I
made a number of small fruitcakes for gifts for people - wrapped them up
in fancy Christmas cellophane etc. Now, I've read all the stories about
the eternal fruitcake gifts in the US, but it's a bit different here.
Although, reading this group, there seem to be quite a number of people
who enjoy fruitcake, so perhaps it's not quite as unpopular in the US as
some of my reading would make me think!

I did leave it a bit late last year to come up with this idea, so while
the cakes were good, they could have been better with more aging. So,
this year I've marked a date in October in my diary and am determined to
    make the cakes then.

The traditional English Christmas Cake long soaked in whisky (or Irish
whiskey) or brandy and coated with marzipan is the best of all things. Yummy
to the Max. The Noblest of all fruitcakes.
