All you need is a mobile phone and a PDA (palm top). Or even one of
those Nokia things which does both. And you'll probably be taking a
PDA anyway just to archive your GPS tracklogs, and a mobile phone just

Hmmm! I'll certainly be taking a mobile. I wasn't planning a PDA, but
I've got one so I could take it.

I need to learn a little about the technology, I think. I confess it
hadn't even crossed my mind to think about archiving (or even making!)
GPS tracklogs. I've never used my mobile for email, either. I did try,
but I couldn't work it out and just moved on. It seems I need to try
again 🙂

It's all great in theory & I've just packed the PDA for tomorrow's
outing (something to do in the lunch stop when cloud obscures all
views!) but it has one major failing - poor battery life and a lack of
3-pin sockets on the tops for recharging. Can't see solar power being
much use at the mo, but if someone wants to invent a portable generator
attached to a rain-powered water wheel they could make a killing!

Today, not a lot. It was too damn cold & windy to sit around for longer
than a cuppa, and the visibility was so bad that I would have had to
have my nose touching the screen to use it. However in better weather
(ha ha) ...

I (being very sad at times) tend to use it to pick up and send e-mail
and to read urw via the inkspot news reader (it ain't great, but its the
best I've found for the pda so far).

Cam also use it to play jawbreaker as well (beware, very addictive and
can seriously impact route times!). It was also handy once for
addresses when writing and posting postcards on top of Snowdon. AAMOI
do they still have the Snowdon postbox?

For Scotland you'd be better off with wind power. A small propeller on
top of the hat would probably do the job.
