peddles turn but wheel doesnt

Assuming you are trying to pedal forwards, it sounds like the pawls in the
freewheel have broken.

Probably just the pawls (the 'ratchet' mechanism) in the freewheel are
sticking down - try giving the
freewheel a knock on the side with heavy wood or something, might just free
them.

Is the chain on? Which wheel doesn't turn? Only the back one should turn
when you peddle. Do you wear glasses, and do you have them on?

Do you have a Sturmey Archer hub gear? If so, you're simply in a false
neutral and need to adjust the control rod a bit. When Sturmeys were
common this was a common problem. However, it's more likely you don't,
so the next probability is that the pawls of your freewheel ratchet are
stuck, usually because of too much old grease.

There are two main kinds of ratchet mechanism. In the more modern kind
('freehub'😉, in all nine and ten speed derailleur systems, the ratchet
is part of the hub. I've never tried to disassemble one of these hubs to
clean the pawls, so I can't tell you how hard it is. The older kind
('freewheel'😉 used in most five, six, and seven speed derailleur systems
has the ratchet in the the cluster of cogs on the left hand side of the
rear wheel. You can easily clean the pawls once you have taken the
cluster off - the only problem is that as it screws on and tightens as
you cycle, it can be a complete [censored] to remove and needs special
tools.

Lubricate with Coppaslip before you put it on. Still need the special
tool, but it will be less of a [censored] to remove.
