I currently have some Look pedals and Nike shoes which are ok for weekend rides but I can't commute to the station in them which I would like to. I am doing a tour next month and am after a set of pedals and shoes which would be good for long rides as well as commutes and would allow me to walk in them comfortably to work (that is on trains, stairs and from the station to my office). If I could get away without the need to bring a separate pair of shoes with me on my tour even better.

You need some SPD pedals which have the cleat recessed so you can walk in them like normal shoes. There are plenty of trainer style shoes available that are SPD compatible. My preference though is the Shimano SPD sandals - St John Street Cycles and one or two other places carry them. For touring they're ideal. Add some waterproof socks for wet weather, some black socks for evening wear and use black socks or no socks for daytime. They don't stay wet so you don't need an extra pair of dry shoes for the evening or have the pleasure of putting on wet shoes the next morning. Cue usual comments about Englishmen, sandals and socks ;-)
