I totally agree. I have been using this technique for seated climbing and it takes some practice but it is very effective, and yes it makes your pedal stroke a little less smooth. Actually, it is not so much practice as it takes time to build muscular endurance in the hamstrings and gluteals, if you haven't used them much before.
