I was asked by a friend about clipless pedal systems that allow you to
walk easily in cycling shoes. I mentioned recessed cleats that do not
interfere with walking. He asked me how to identify these when
shopping online and I realized I didn't know what to suggest. I though
that this is what is meant by 'Shimano Pedaling Dynamics' (which
deserves some sort of award for cheesy and meaningless adspeak). A lot
of shoes are described as being 'SPD compatible'. Does this mean they
accept a recessed cleat? Are there any other systems that make it
possible to walk without doing that old 'tap dancer on ice' routine?
Thanks for your help.
Best wishes,
Nigel Grinter

Crank Brothers pedals (such as the Eggbeaters) work very much like SPD's.
The cleat size and hole spacing are fully compatible. -

The shoes will have recesses where the cleats attach (as in the photos
at the link below.)

pontoons for walking (not as practical/comfortable as the recessed
cleats).Art Harris

Nigel,
What you are generally looking for is shoes described as mountain bike or
ATB shoes. These generally have the recesses the others have mentioned. I
guess you could have an SPD bolt pattern without the recess- not sure if
anyone does this, though.Quoted message said:

Some are also simply called "recreational cycling" shoes or "touring"
shoes.I've found that with the last pair of Lake mtb shoes I had, the cleat
wasn't fully recessed enough to not "click" a bit on tile floors. -
Thanks to everyone for their replies. If I correctly understand what
has been said, 'SPD compatible' generally means the shoes will accept a
recessed cleat for ease of walking and that the Crank Brothers' system
provides similar benefits.
Best wishes,
Nigel
