Hi there, I'm the newbie on the block with a newbie type question.
I have an older Schwinn (mid 80's) with a three piece crank and the chain side appears to be slightly bent causing the chain to be too tight or loose as I pedal. Can I switch the center piece around ?
Sounds to me like your problem might be associated with the tension spring on your rear derailleur (or some other rear der adjustment issue).
Does your crank have Shimano Biopace chainrings, by chance?
Are you riding a bike with gears?
If so, then chain tightness is unlikely to be a problem unless the chain length has been set too short to use all gears properly.
Alternatively, are you saying that the chainrings don't appear straight as you pedal?
If so, this is unlikely to be a problem unless it actually interferes with shifting. Many things could be out of alignment:
The chainrings themselves could be bent (most common), the spider which supports them could be bent, the tapered hole for the BB shaft could have been machined off axis or the Bottom bracket bearings could be shot and/or running loose allowing the crank to wiggle around. The very last item I'd expect to be faulty is the shaft itself since it is a LOT harder and stronger than the other items mentioned above.
If the BB can be taken apart, and the shaft appears symmetric then you could swap it over but I really doubt this is necessary and if it were bent you really need to replace it completely.
