In a cobbled section near the Velodrome. Depending on crowds etc, you can sometimes view the
cobbled section and rush to the Velodrome for the arrival... but you have to be fast, parked
apropriately, etc...

Take your mountain bike and ride the course the day before (there is a cylo-sportive organized).

Doing this on the velodrome (watching the big screen) might be a slight improvement on the format.

I suggest you base yourself in Valenciennes (Hotel Notre Dame is highly recommended by Davey but
make sure you reserve early as Valenciennes is busy the Pascaale weekend)

If you have a vehicle at your disposal and plan the day in advance you should be able to see the
riders several times.

Get up to date information from the local coureurs.

Notwithstanding the thrill of actually seeing the riders, the best place is, as others have pointed
out, in a bar that has a large screen TV.

I think that would be the best place to watch- getting splashed while standing knee deep in mud, and
surrounded by screaming fans who have already had their eighth beer!

Don't get too close to the mud!!!!!

Recommendation:

1.) Make sure you have auto insurance for a rental car.
2.) Rent a car with a manual transmission.
3.) Buy a cheap styrofoam ice chest if you can find one.
4.) Fill ice chest with food and drinks.
5.) Buy a newspaper that shows the coarse.
6.) Buy a map.
7.) Have something like this with you:

8.) Drive the coarse the day before starting in Compiegne.
9.) Find all the traffic bottlenecks the day before.
10.) Mark up your map with where you want to be.
11.) Stay in Compiegne the night before.
12.) Leave Compiegne 30 minutes or so before the riders leave.
13.) Follow the coarse that you've selected.
14.) Follow the pod.
15.) Overcome your fear of pissing outside.

Of course no sooner do I post this... unfortunatly it has just been announced that the Mountain Bike
ride will no longer take place (after 13 years of existance).... too bad; that was a lot of fun.

Not only that but I found out that it is a hell of a lot better way to see the race if you aren't
from the area and know all the tricks of getting around. Otherwise all the hell you see is the back
of other spectator's heads and one or two cyclists grunting. Then you can't get out of the traffic
jams and get anywhere near the finish in time to see anything but everyone leaving.

Hello-

I went to the 2001 P-R with a tour company based in London. The upside to this approach is you don't
have to drive, and you are pretty much guaranteed to see the race from 4 or 5 places. The downside
is that in order to see all these places, you pretty much run from the bus to roadside, wait a few
minutes, watch the leading group go by, and jump back in the bus. The timing to get from place to
place is very tight.

If you're not intimately familiar with Northern France, or don't know anyone who is, I would
regard driving the route as a daunting task, and I would not attempt it without at least a very
able co-pilot.

If you do a chartered tour, try to get a battery TV or a personal radio to watch/hear the race
unfold. Its really the only way to get a feel for whats happening.

Whatever you choose to do, by all means go...The experience of standing in Arenberg or the Roubaix
Velodrome is worth the trip.
