  1. I have got myself a new bike and I have invested a lot of thought and effort
to get it just like I wanted it, including choosing between 200 colors of
paint for the frame. To my eye the paint job is fine. BUT .... I am
afraid the paint isn't as hard and resistant as it should be. I put
colored electricians tape on the frame, where the cable shoes touch it -
but at one spot I did not place the tape accurately enought, so there has
been a wear on the paint for two weeks/ 500 km. And already the paint is
worn off complely on that particular spot.
I tend to interpret that as an indication of the paint beeing too soft.
And since I spend 2600 Euro on the bike - 900 was for the (painted) frame
alone - I would expect the paint job to be of a good quality. I have seen
cable wear on the paint on my other bikes, but never this soon.
But I am ignorant of the different qualities of paint jobs, and I don't know
what to ask for or to look for. So I need help:
Does the rubbing of a hole in the paint after 500 km indicate a poor paint
    quality?
Am I right in expecting a better quality on a 900 euro frame?
If the shop owner says this was the quality I paid for, should I hurry to
have it repainted with at clear and hard paint, while the colored paint is
    still new?
I would appreciate some of the exeprienced advice I have found before in
this group - or maybe a link for my further education.

  2. Hi Ivar, I'm a bit confused about what you mean by "Cable Shoes, but
I'm thinking that you mean "Cable End Caps" Where the Cable housings
stop/end at the frame Cable Stop, Correct?

Perhaps this paint job was not fully cured, or not baked for a short
period. Most Clear Coat finishes used today should require a baking to
help fully dry the paint. Not everyone does this though.

Yes, the new Clear Coat Paints come in a Myriad of colors, and do
rival the old Laquer paints of yesteryear, but they are indeed
delicate. Figure that the clear coat alone, is about the thickness of
    a postage stamp.

Polyurethanes, and another paint called "Imron", are much more durable
    paints.

About the only thing you can do, is find out what the paint code is,
and see if you can order yourself a bottle of touch up paint from
    somewhere.?

After touch up, you can perhaps buff, and wax again after touch up
paint is dry, and you might be able to think up another way of
protecting your paint in this particular area? Perhaps a very thin
small nylon washer from an electronics shop? Something that would not
be spongy, and effect you brake performance, yet prevent
    metal-to-paint contact?

As far as other areas to be protected, I have seen these little rubber
donuts-O-Rings that are slipped over the cables, and prevent
    cable/paint rubbing.
    Hope this helps, Mark
