pain when injecting Lantus

I have never had the misfortune to suffer extreme pain
when injecting. However, I some times get discomfort
when the lantus is gong in and for several seconds
after. Normally I have put this down to hitting an older
injection spot or a new one.

Your awareness is lacking. THE best basal insulin is without
doubt BEEF insulin.

So you have a choice IF you're not living in the States
(and even then you have, because you can import beef
insulin yourself)

You're injecting acid. First question, is this pain only
caused by Lantus, or do other insulins cause pain too? I'll
assume from the form of your question that this pain is
specific to Lantus.

Hey, herbal insulin, what do you know! (Sorry, couldn't
resist it).

Lantus _isn't_ the best basal insulin around. It's best for
some people, no doubt, and a whole mass of others can use it
without problems, although they'd likely do just as well
with a traditional insulin. And it's certainly the best
insulin for Aventis (its makers), because they make a hefty
profit out of it (i.e., out of you).

Lantus is also very dodgy from the durability point of view,
and inconvenient in the extreme if you also use other
insulin (you "can't" mix them in a syringe, for example.)
Whether there are long term consequences attached to its use
(does it cause cancer, for example) won't be known for a
long time yet.

However, it is most probably _not_ the best for you,
causing as it does excruciating pain. Good alternatives are
Lente and Ultralente, preferably pork or beef. They are
neutral, not acid.

Dave,,,are you sure the insulin is warm, not just out ot the
fridge? You can draw up the needed am't and hold in your
hand til it is warm, then inject. I took Lantus for quite
awhile, never had any problem....but it is another

Try to inject at a slower pace. Often injected fluids
hurt when they're injected too fast. As soon as you feel
pain coming up, wait a few seconds before injecting the
next unit.

Lantus is not really the best basal insulin available.
It is "the best basal insulin available" for::

a. Folks who can't get their hands on beef Lente

b. Folks who want a one-a-day basal, i.e. folks
not interested in basals which don't work well
unless injected as small dose injections,
several times a day

c. Human NPH works sorta OK if the daily
dose is split into 4-5 injections
though Bernstein says don't use it
under any circumstances

ii. Human Ultralente will work for some folks
if the daily dose is split into two
injections though I can't make it work
well enough unless I split the daily dose
into three injections. Human Lente works
about the same but many think the only
supplier is going to discontinue it.

c. Folks who can't handle the careful agitation
protocol needed to properly mix the cloudy
insulins before loading the syringe,

c.a. Lente and Ultralente must be well shaken before
injection. In essence, one should shake until the
last second before drawing into the syringe. .
See Bernstein for a pictures of the moderately
difficult technique. (The worse your arthritis
and/or eyesight, the more difficult this
technique becomes.)

It does tend to sting for a bit, but I don't find it to be
bad. It is worse if at refrigerator temperature. Try letting
the vial approach room temperature before injecting.

The sting is related to the ph...and I have much better
results with Lantus than the previous NPH, so I find it's
worth putting up with.

It is quite likely that lantus could be painful for some
user. While most insulins have relative Neutral pH, Lantus
is quite acid, it has to be to keep the insulin in solution.
The key to Lantus activity is the formation of relatively
insoluble precipitate at body pH.

sometimes I get a slight burning, but it goes away quickly.
you are not injecting it cold are you?

Yes, I often experience a burning at the injection sight.
Sometimes even hours leter.
