  1. Hello all,

I've just started running and I'm experiencing quite a bit of pain
above the knee. I've been to a local running specialist and got the
right shoes for my build and weight. I can not seem to get past a mile
before the pain begins. Once the pain starts my legs lock up, similar
to a cramp but different. I've been bicycling for over a year now
without any issues. I was hoping someone could enlighten me as to what
could be ailing me. I've been trying to gear up for a sprint tri and
the running portion is really bugging me...

    Thanks again,

Get yourself to a good, qualified, chiropractor. It sounds like a
    bio-mechanical problem.

  3. What's ailing you Mr. Obvious, is running. It's one of the worst things
you can do to yourself. If you doubt me, just scroll through the
thousands of "I hurt myself running today" posts. And what kills me, is
that most of these mouth breathers will ask TheBillRodgers for advice
before they even think of scheduling an appointment with someone who
might actually have a clue. You've probably already e-mailed him,
    haven't you?

  4. Is runnings ailing him, what's your beef?

    No such luck.

Because they need the advice of a real 9 mile a day runner, not these
tippy-toed lil' pansies who run around a football field one time and
    proclaim "I'm a runner".

    Twice.

  6. Other things to try are soft surfaces, stretching,
weight training specifically for knee problems.

I'm concerned that running is not appropriate
for you body. Knee issues dont usually crop
    up that soon.

I too want to do a triathlon and have no trouble with bicycling but a
lot of difficulty with running, though in my case it was hip pain after
running. I switched to running on a track for a softer surface. I
decided I would try building up extremely slowly, starting with one
lap--1/4 mile--every other day. It took me a month or so before I felt
the pain was diminishing and I added another lap. I slowly worked my
way up, though I had to back off when I had some back problems and had
to work my way up again. Seven months later I am running a mile and a
half 3 days a week, with only twinges afterwards.

It isn't much, but it looks like it is going to work to meet my goal of
a sprint tri in May. I'm 49 and have never run before and I think there
are a lot of muscles that need to build up for my legs to be able to
handle the pounding. The problem is telling the difference between
aches as you build up and doing yourself injury. I decided to do that
1/4 mile for a while and see if the pain got less or more, and very
    slowly it got less.

    Pam
