  1. First of all, yes, I did have an axe-ident...

Do they make any pads for road cycling?

I was checking 661 and they seem to only make pads for Mountain biking and Motocross or something dodgy like that.

I mean a nice spine protecting jersey or vest is not a bad idea eh??? 🙁

    Fanks. 🙂

  2. Volnix, since I returned to the forums to ask about helmet-mounting of headlights, I have noticed with great concern your change of avatar plus a reference to an accident. I hope you are healing well.

I'm not sure exactly what you might be looking for, but I'm wondering if maybe a square piece of Kevlar could be sewn into the back of your jersey. I've never worn Kevlar, you understand. I've read too many Jack Higgins and Tom Clancy novels, and these have caused me to interpret the phrase "spine protecting" to mean "Kevlar or better, as an anti road rash cloth."

Again, I hope you are recovering from the accident and feeling better minute by minute.

    Bob

  3. I'm a bit better thanks and the avatar was just too hideous not to use it. 😄

Dont care about scratches much... Road rash I can live with, cracked backbones not so much. 🙁

I was think like impact absorbing pads like the ones used on Moto jackets and downhill vests.

I mean, road cycling speeds are quite similar to downhill and probably comparably dangerous...

    Something like this:

  4. You could honestly just buy a Kevlar vest and wear it. That would be pretty practical.

  5. I'm more worried about knocks...

  6. EVOC seems to be making something like that:

    About 300g...

  7. ...and POC too.

  8. They used to make shorts and insert pads for USCF Gladiatorial Combat criterium racing. You might Google around and see if they are still being manufactured. The pad was positioned on the outside of the hip a helped absorb the impact of slamming into the road...lessened hip pointer injuries / bruises in addition to preventing road rash on the thigh and ass cheek areas. They were sold in the 1980's.

There are other brands and I'm sure you could cut some 1/2"...er...1.5 Cm thick EVA or closed cell foam to slip in the old shorts you already have. A Greek seamstress could sew in a pair of inside pockets to hold the foam in place, using old Lycra shorts as a material source.

I missed the back story, Volnix. Were you run down by some broke ass Greek that hasn't paid his taxes in the last 30 years...driving a new Benz? A resigned finance minister try committing suicide by walking out in front of your bike ('cause the banks were closed and no one could buy gas for their Yugo's?

Details, man! We need details! Pics of those scars and the X-Rays! Bonus points for bloody jersey pics or shredded gloves and crack helmets!

    I second the motion.

  10. I don't remember! 🙁

Last thing I remember was going to this night ride and at some point I opened my eyes and there were people around. Then da Polizei and then an ambulance.

Had CAD scans, XRays and then some more CAD scans.

Stayed two days in pre surgery ward and got released.

Cracked spine, stitches in the chin, seeing double and road rash everywhere. Coughing hurts like a m@therf@cker... 🙁

By the looks of it I knocked something with my left side, probably with the handlebar and then crashed.

The police said that I crashed into two vehicles.

Photos, ofcourse: Bloody enough for you? 😄

I can see how that's a wake up call. Road safety is an issue we all should take a vocal stance on in our local communities.

  12. Even pixelated I can make out the cut on your chin - but I imagine that is pretty insignificant compared to the spine injury - ouch!!!

  13. Dude! You've been...pixelated to death!

Don't remember? What? You don't remember that 500 Yuros that you owe me, either...I suppose?

Damn! You took a good lick. Compression fracture to the spine? Were you hit by a car from behind? Because it takes a hellova hard blow from a solid object to do that kind of damage...as a rule. A hard fall to the pavement 'can' do it (ask Cancellara! ref. Stage 3, 2015 TDF crash at 35 MPH) if the stars align, but usually hitting the edge of something hard and concentrating the impact force is what does the bone damage.

    Seeing double...concussion?

I hope you heal up quickly and that your back doesn't cause any long term issues.

I cracked L1 and L2 back in 1993 and my back has been FUBAR ever since. Go slowly for a few weeks and get back on the back when the doctors say you're safe to...not before! The chin? Chicks dig scars!

And leave the bloody jersey as is. Frame it under glass and hang it in the garage or shop area. Invent some story about beating Froome up the Tourmalet and then getting in a fight with him. He...uh...got a lucky punch in before you threw him off the side of the mountain. Sounds believable to me.

  14. Eurozzz? What's Eurozzz? 😄

I really have no idea... The police said that I was in "shock" or something but I'm not sure what that means.

The spine has a very thin vertical fracture and needs 3 weeks on bed and then another xray. The chin I will go to remove the stitches on Friday at the "body shop"... 😄

The double vision is either nerve damage or muscle? damage? Not sure but I will be checking it later.

I washed the jersey unfortunately. 😄 Hey it was 40 eurozzz! 😄

I might start growing shrooms in the helmet and get a Sex Nurse or something though. 😄

F@ckin hell that knock on the helmet gives me PDSD...

  15. Well yeah, you were probably pretty out of it with those injuries. I wonder if you were clipped by a car mirror that sent you flying? Hit and run?

We gotta get you a GoPro so you know who to file suit against if there is a next time.

  16. Those photos surely scared me. I really don't know what to say because injuries like that reminds me of my broken arm which needed a steel bracket (until now that steel support for the broken bone is still there. When I see the news about a motorcycle mishap, I just ignore it but when a cyclist gets injured it's pitiful because the bike has no engine unlike the motorcycle. Besides, the body of the bike is thin and light such that it cannot put up a defense.

  17. Grandma's always after me to wear more protection (on my bike guys, she's actually upset I use condoms.)
Might start... I have a full 661 setup, it's just go G damn hot too wear.
I know it might slow you down, but honestly downhill protective gear is amazing.

  18. Hi Volnix, my heart goes out to you and I hope you recover fast. You look to be a very strong and healthy guy, so I think you will recover just fine. Be sure to just rest and take things easy.

I'm surprised you were allowed to wear your cycling clothes in a hospital bed. Isn't that a good way to give you a secondary infection? I thought separate clean gowns are the usual standard. Note: I've never been in a hospital outside of the USA. So I'm an European hospital innocent.

My very best wishes to you for a quick healing!

    Bob

  19. "Grandma's always after me to wear more protection (on my bike guys, she's actually upset I use condoms.)"

Nope...not gonna say it! Not going there! Nope!

  20. They probably didn't want to move you around to undress you until they knew the extent of your back injury. That would be my guess.

The frappucinno (well, whatever kind of coffee drink that was) was what seemed out of place to me - ER room service over there?
