  1. Here's a really stupid question. Why is padding put in the bike shorts rather than on the bike
saddles? Why not make bike shorts with no padding at all, and put the exact same thickness of
    padding on the saddle itself?

Because different people like different amounts of padding, and it's easier to try different
pairs of shorts to find the one you like than it is to swap saddles over and over to find the
    one you like.

I think some ppl like the padded/lambs-wool type to prevent chafing, but myself, I use regular
    compression shorts, not bike shorts.

Good topic, though. I'd like to know if others cut theirs out, or not, and what the 'pros' here
    wear...well, semi-pros/experts. ;-)

At 30-45min/day, I don't ride far enough for it to be an issue, though.

(Right now, I'm looking for a long flat trail to do a longer ride next spring, if there's anyone who
can suggest same in the Virginia area.)

Well, we have 55-60 miles worth of the New River Trail around here. Over in Damascus/Abingdon you
can ride the Virginia Creeper trail for 33 miles, all downhill if you like! Also check out the
Greenbrier Trail in WV, which is over 100 miles. Look 'em up on Google.

It's nice to take a break from the hills around here once in awhile, and be able to go on a long,
    flat ride.

Thanks Matt. My folks live in Newport News, and it's pretty durn flat there. Since my brother lives
in Va Beach, I've ridden there several years ago and that's all pancake flat...again, traffic, but
there are some subdivisions I can ride in a continuous loop.

I have relatives in Beckley W.Va; that may be near the New River?

I'll look up those you mentioned. 'preciate the leads.

Hmmm, a content-free post, just to change the header?

The Creeper Trail looks heavenly. A little far away for me, but someday worth a vacation to
    ride there.

I once envisioned a trek on the Potomac Canal trail in Washington, DC, but I make it a point not
to travel to DC these days. It's not worth the traffic-madness; not even safe to park in
    Georgetown, IMO.

Someday, I'm hoping soon, the Charlottesville Rivanna trail will be linked up and we'll have some
really long rides possible. Don't think we'll ever be able to circumnavigate the city, though b/c
the part near I-64 is a narrow ankle-busting rip-rock scrabble, but I hope the part near my house
will soon be linked up with a larger portion.

It sure is, but I don't know of any rail trails right there. The New River Trail goes from Pulaski
to Galax in southwestern VA. It's about a 30 min. drive from my home in Blacksburg, which in turn is
about 90 min. from Beckley, WV.

BTW, this is *the* weekend to go to Beckley. Saturday is Bridge Day, one of the biggest happenings
    of the year:

    wvbridgeday.comwvbridgeday.com

Besides the BASE jumping, there's a lot of stuff going on -- live music, arts and crafts, outdoor
gear sales at the shops in Fayetteville, and the legendary Roadkill Food Festival. There's
supposedly some good mountain biking around there. The fall foliage is shaping up too.

Anyway, Beckley would be a great central location for all this stuff.

Including some of the best snow skiing in the SE. ;-)

(From here, the best route goes through a place called Goshen Pass. Very scenic, along a great set
of rocky rapids. Wish they had a cycling route through -that-.)

    Thx for the tips.

Riding around Snowshoe/Marlinton isn't too shabby either.

Rt. 39. There was a big organized ride up there a few weeks ago. Missed it, damn.

My sister used to live in Lexington. I've spent plenty of time exploring around there. It's a
    beautiful place.

The padding in the shorts moves with you, always padding the spots that need padding while allowing
the other areas to sweat through thin fabric, no matter where on the saddle you are. Additionally,
because those spots of the shorts are not exposed to air, the padding absorbs sweat to keep you dry
    and protect from chafing.

Of course, if there was no padding in the shorts, my girlfriend would never let me go out of the
house in them...they're thin and tight enough as it is.

It's to make the bike weigh less.

It's easier to put your shorts than your saddle in the washing machine.

You'll find that sitting on a bike saddle for long periods of time will answer your question. The larger a bike saddle and softer, the more likely you are to suffer chafing and sweat rash. Padding in bicycle shorts is made of soft and absorbant material to alleviate these problems. Also you can wash your shorts but it would be difficult to wash the saddle. Finally, when wearing bike shorts with padding, don't wear underpants otherwise you will discover the joys of getting a wedgy and a sweaty one at that.
