And when you were sneaking up on it from behind.... did you notice if
there's another pocket/more than one (eg on the collar) where it can be

/Ususally/ these thing work by pushing everything through the open
pocket-entrance from the back, so in the end the pocket is
inside-out and everything else is within.

However, you can just stuff it into a cranny in your bag and that
will work just as well.

The Gore, I know not. Both my Endura and my Campagnolo ones pack easily
into their built in pouches - in the Endura case it is indeed the back
pocket. However, only the Campag one packs small enough that one would
willingly carry it in a back pocket when packed.

Don't fold, just stuff the thing in, the same as with sleeping bags.

That's how my Gore works (and very easily it stuffs in too). Gore
were even nice enough to provide a triangular pocket with velcro
straps to hold the jacket in the corner of a frame. A lovely idea,
but unfortunately nigh-on impossible to secure to my compact frame,
which lacks the requisit angles...
