Oxygen supplement? anyone tried this/comments??

  1. Have seen adds of late relating to oxygen supplements, but not sure of the product or the claims. Was wondering if there's any merit in this or if anyone has tried it and has some substantiated data on benefits of use.

  2. In all fairness to the product, I have never used it, but the whole science behind it seems kinda fishy. If you want more oxygen in your water/gatorade/sports drink, give it a good shake before drinking. I think that oxygen supplements are just another fad that will be gone in six months.

    I have to admit I found the concept a little cranky - "like there isn't enough oxygen in the air !" - I was a little tempted to mail the link to the product around our jokes list at work..

    .. But you do indeed go hyperactive on an oxygen enriched atmosphere, dont you? (not that that's a very practical peice of apparatus for a cyclist..) - but it IS also dangerous I thought.

    On vaguely related note - i wondered if this claimed substance is anything like the liquid 'breathed' in the deep-sea diving suit featured in the "The Abyss".. ( is that even real, someone mentioned to me it was .. )

    i'm a bit the same on this, but have seen a few of these oxygen related claims floating about lately. This product was also promoted in a triathlon mag so it got me curious....must have just been the $ they threw at the mag to get it in i guess.

    I think that was "breathed" into the lungs, and not swallowed like this supplement. The "facts" they (sPorts oxyshot) present about oxygen (more oxygen in blood, better performance) are correct, but the method of absorbtion is not. As far as I know and I am by no means an expert on this, oxygen cannot be absorbed into the bloodstream by the digestive system only the respiratory system. Maybe someone with more knowledge about this sort of thing can chime in.

  6. Oxygen is not very soluble in water, about 5 mg/litre at normal atmopheric pressure. That's equivalent to about 3.5 mL. During normal breathing you take in about 500 mL of air, which is 21% oxygen, or 105 mL of oxygen.
    So even if you can absorb oxygen from your intestinal tract you'll have to drink a lot of that stuff to get the same oxygen as one normal breath.

    I call 'snake oil'.

  8. I wondered if water is really water if you add further oxygen to it. Water is two parts hydrogen to one part oxygen.

    If it comes close to two parts oxygen, ie H202, then it is hydrogen peroxide and not palatable.

  9. Unless you have a serious medical condition, in which case you won't have much interest in sport, the oxygen saturation of your blood will be 100% so how can this "extra" oxygen be carried? Waste of money.

    Uh, there's a BIG difference between adding an atom to a molecule and dissolving a gas in a liquid.

    Atmospheric oxygen is O2, by the way.

  11. I believe they pass electricity through this Oxyshot water and the Oxygen is some how condensed so that the overall oxygen : density ratios are altered.

    The water would pass into your bloodstream via the large intestine.

    The dosages for this stuff are less than 200ml (much less I think). If you used this stuff on a full stomach mixed with food and other liquids it would probably not be absorbed into the bloodstream very effectively.

    If it was used on an empty stomach after or during exercise the extra oxygen may get into the muscles quicker than by breahting. The oxygen would be in the blood fluid rather than on the red blood cells. ????

    If you used tis stuff often enough it could behave like altitude training by increasing the oxygen level of the whole body.

    The stuff is too expensive now for me to bother with. A lot of athletes are using it and claiming increased levels of fitness as well as faster recovery.

    A 1% improvement would be enough to make it a seller (if the price was right).
    Being a new product with little history it will take a few years before we know all the facts.

    If you drank this stuff in large quantities you'd be just oxygenating your toilet...

    I was tempted to use this stuff before my last race as I hadn't trained enough.

    Didn't use it and got dropped on the 1st hill. I don't think this stuff would've got me over the hill though... For me a few lost pounds and more ks on the bike will improve my times a lot more....

    I'll keep my eye on this stuff though in the meantime.

  12. It is impossible to "flood" the body with oxygen. Even if you were to breathe pure O2 (air is only 20.9%) the hemoglobin-oxygen buffer prevents the O2 from being distributed to the body's cells from the dissolved O2 in the blood (except when breathing too high partial pressure of O2). As eric says, O2 is not very soluble in water (that's why nature invented hemoglobin), so anything that you drink that touts benefits from the O2 in it is doodoo. Or voodoo.

    but..

    If the fluid in your body is carrying extra oxygen (ie the water content of your blood in the plasma) wouldn't the haemoglobin prey on that resource in times of dures or anaerobic exercise?

    Assuming that the water you drink that has a higher concentration of O2 in it will get into the plasma...

    (I'm talking about the Oxyshot water).

    How do these companies expain it scientifically?

    if they don't how do they get away with selling the stuff ?

    here's a thought what about the anti oxident vitamins isn't that at odds to increasing the bloods oxygen levels?

Ive tried the Sports Oxy Shot,seemed ok to me.Costs around $60 though.Then when i went to buy a new bottle,i went to GNC which didnt actually sell it but they had a brand called Oxyrich www.oxyrich.info and the beauty of this product is its only $29 with almost identical ingredients to oxyshot.BTW they both taste like chlorinated pool water so i mix it with juice.
    If it gives me an edge over the guy next to me i dont mind spending the $30.

  18. Alcohol gets into your bloodstream by drinking it, so i dont know why this oxygen supplement cant...
    and there is a lack of oxygen in the air thats why people get asthma. 🙂

    No and No.

    With comments like that I'd head down to the local ER and have them clip an oximeter on your finger to see if your blood O2 levels have dropped through the floor. I can only assume that your brain is somewhat starved of oxygen.

    The large majority of oxygen comes in through your lungs and NOT the digestive system. Yes, oxygen in some forms is taken up, partly in water, but for the majority of it, it is from the lungs.

    Entirely true, in healthy individuals normal saturation is 97-100% and most of this is bound to hemoglobin. Diffusion is based on the smaller percentage of free/unbound O2 in the blood. The more blood cells the more you can carry around because more will be bound, and more will flow in through the lungs. At times of high demand, such as cycling, more oxygen will be unloaded off of hemoglobin at the muscles. The concept of blood doping is more hemoglobin, the more oxygen the blood can carry, more O2 released, better performance.

    So it can be carried, but not through your stomach. It requires more blood cells and your lungs to do the trick. Not this product.

    It won't get into your plasma, because that happens primarily and I mean almost entirely, at the lungs. They get away with this because people don't know the science behind it and they use that in order to sell useless, expensive supplements. Yeah O2 is absorbed in some form or fashion in the intestines, but the percentage is almost nothing.

    Anti-oxidants should be called anti-products of oxidation. Oxidation is a process in which electrons are lost from any chemical in the body. Not just oxygen. Electrons like to be in pairs, and what this process does is produce free radicals or unpaired electrons. These electrons are almost like magnets for each other and want to pair up. The body uses these processes and keeps them sequestered in special compartments to engulf things like bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc to kill them off. However, when these sequestered items get released due to trauma, cell death, environmental causes, diet, etc. they can now react with our bodies causing damage. This damage can lead to scavenger cells in our body building up and digesting material at the site of damage leading to such problems as atherosclerosis. Anti-oxidants however float around, bind the products of oxidation that are not properly sequestered or that were from an external source, and prevent damage to our bodies.

    So no, it's not at odds to increasing the bloods oxygen levels.

    There isn't a lack of oxygen in the air leading to asthma. Asthma is a reaction where the body is hypersensitive to contaminants in the environment, acts like it's getting sick causing mucus secretion and narrowing of the airways to stop further "infection." This causes airflow to decrease and the choking and panic sensation found in asthma. There isn't a lack of oxygen in the air, but a lack of oxygen in that particular person's body.

    Alcohol get's into your bloodstream since it's digested like all other liquids and foods. Oxygen is almost entirely taken in at your lungs. I'm pretty sure the reverse is also true.. alcohol isn't absorbed in your lungs and neither is water. Last time I checked, that was called drowning.
