Tim, if its any recompense, I came off tonight while journeying home

    Avoiding a cat.

Now trying to find ice in the freezer with a elbow & knee that won't
    bend too well. 🙁

And Bikesoilers up at Kona24 (cfsmtb goes off & sooks quietly)

Hmmmm. We would have rescued you if you had asked 🙁

Wasnt my cat. SHe is asleep in wine box

Nah, Union St in Northcote. Ruddy cat. Fine now, have ice. Finding other bits that hurt too. Minor damage to road bike. Bugger.

There seems to be a lot of us limping about at the moment?

On the pushy in the wet.. 90 degrees or walking speed I reckon.

I'll admit to being a poor tram deprived Sydney sider, but is it really
that hard to hop sideways over the track? With full panniers it'd be a bit
trickier, but still doable - I can get over a kerb at speed with quite a
    few kg on the back.

Not trying to feed any flames here, just curious.

First I have to learn how to get one wheel off the ground. Then both
    alternately. Then both simultaneously.

Read the theory. Performed the actions. Me no jump!

I can brute force the front wheel -- and that's what I do -- I select
a fairly low gear, and gun it. (Sometimes, I get the wrong gear, and
the front wheel doesn't lift off, and I go smack into the gutter still
clipped in, with predicatable results to everyone's amusement). Then
once the front wheel is over, I'll take weight off the back wheel, but
I can never actually lift it up, just dampen the shock.

Its the fact that their are 4 of em at least. And at some intersections
an amazing number. And any one can spill you. Yeah one kerb aint
that hard.. Mind you personally I can;t do that at speed.

Yeah, Y-junctions are almost impossible to do risk-free. You may be
at 90 degrees to one rail, but the next, you won't be. And you can't
be 90 degrees without getting off and walking anyway.

Ouch Tim, you didn't really need to do that, the rumour is that you had the a.b Crash Bandicoot of the Year 2005 in the bag already.

man... attention seekers....! there is easier/less painful ways to seek attention.. 🙂 glad to hear youre ok....

while out practising for the KOna ride this weekend, I was wrapt I made it over the big log pile at Lysterfield.... fully pumped I was... go around a couple of corners after wards... a pi**y little log.... "pfffff, going to bunny hop this sucker" back wheel got the log..... spewing I was by myself.... no one got to share in my funniest home video moment, bruised ego, right hop, scraped up, elbow, hand and arm.... all pretty funny really... 🙂

    Practice, Grasshoppah!

4 tracks shouldn't be a problem if you're roughly parallel. Assuming
you're not about to head on a tram (which would be bad, even Sydney types
know that much) you just hop 1, then the next, and keep going. 20cm
sideways is reasonably easy once you've practiced a bit.

If you're planning to do much offroad, bunny hopping becomes an almost
essential skill. Drop your saddle and jump straight up while clipped in.
There, dodgy [censored] bunny hop. Take it from there.

Dave - who is getting the hang of the manual to bunny hop (front wheel
comes up a lot earlier, and you "roll" over the obstacle)

Tram tracks are sneaky. They lie there, looking all innocent until
they see a bicycle, then they reach out and grab one wheel,
tipping the cyclist onto the road while the cyclists feet are
    still on the pedals.

You probably could hop over the tracks, but it's a matter of
how many times you want to lie sprawled on the road when
you make a mistake. As Tim found, you can ride across them
many times, then one time something changes (e.g. wet road,
traffic) and your judgement isn't correct.

Being caught by tram tracks once was enough for me to
treat them very cautiously. I thought I was being cautious
the one time I did end up on the road.

And now sopping wet. I am listening to my shoes dripping infront of
the heater, and hoping that all my correspondence in my bag is not
soaked through. Rain can make for a fun commute, although you need to
be in the right frame of mind. Was damn cold once I stopped to do
some shopping, but as soon as I got moving again, ahhh, no need to
rush, I'm already as wet as I am going to get.

I think it's great that you posted that before getting warm and dry.

Oh I dunno about that. FD was definitely up there.
