He didn't stick in the slipstream long enough to get any real benefit,
but he certainly didn't make it look very authentic either. I think the
psychological effect of having those vehicles between him and the win
was the important thing, and they ABSOLUTELY should not have been there.
The gap was nowhere near a minute.

It shouldn't happened, but the situation at the end was a bit extreme with
all soloist - break leftovers- peloton coming together. So where should all
the motors have gone? It's easy to talk harsh about the organisation, but
practically what should they have done. There were 5 second gaps all over.

And images can be misleading, as all the cars and motors went much too slow
for Mattan. Of course, they were still of some help, but they were also a
risk to Mattan.

In recent years , I have seen potentially decisive attacks by favorites be
blocked by motors in LBL and Amstel. Never heard of any sanction
afterwards.

Anyway thanks VDB !! Thinking back of being in front there with Frank, all
those years ago, and hearing the fans, Nico put himself together for that
last kilometer.
