  1. Roadworks this morning in a secondary road I frequently use in
Melbourne's outer east. The council guy with the Stop sign said I was
welcome to use the adjacent bike track, but I said No, I'd wait.
The sign went to Slow, so I passed the local brothel, waved to the
council guy at the other end, and other traffic, oncoming traffic and a
few chicanes permitting, started to filter past me.
Except for FLS-112, a white Nissan Pulsar c. 1992 with two occupants.
The passenger side window came down as they came up to me, the driver
then screamed, `Get on the bike path'. I declined without using any four
    letter words, but emphatically.
The driver then screamed `Get off the f---ing road', gave me the finger,
    and roared off.
All very ho-hum, and a distinct sense of deja-vu, except for one
interesting aspect: both occupants were caucasian, in their teens or
    early 20s, and female.
Had they spent more than the average 2.1 seconds they'd lost passing me,
I might have told them that I've been a licenced driver for 25 years and
seen enough cyclists do dumb (and often illegal) things.
I might also have directed them to the nearest police station, who could
have have informed them of my rights as a legitmate road user.
I find myself forced to agree in this case with Critical Mass: I wasn't
obstructing traffic, I AM traffic. It seems this message is still not
    getting through to everyone.

I was on my way down Springvale Rd this morning and had a car try and
overtake me within the same lane (because the two other lanes were full
of traffic). But with no room for him to do it safely I moved across to
the right to remove any further temptation. Then he tries to overtake
(undertake??) on the left between me and the gutter. So I move back to
the centre of the lane. This continued on for a while and when he tried
to squeeze past me when the traffic stopped things got a little more
    heated.

Now what I found truly bizarre about all this is that I was on the
motorbike at the time (FJ1200 so not exactly small) and even if he got
past me he'd be stuck behind the car in front of me. So my thinking is
for some [censored] it doesn't matter if you are on a bike, motorbike, or
car, they're still gonna be [censored]. It's just that when you are in a
car you can't hear them yell.

I would probably have felt obliged to do something about this. 🙂 I had
a similiar situation in Swan st melb when a guy in a little honda passed
me on the left in the left lane. I swerved right as he went thru and
scared the hell out of Kathy on the pillion. It was close enough that I
think he would have clipped us if I had not seen him coming. Next set
of lights I reved it hard next to the drivers ear and then happily
lanesplit the 200 or so cars to the red light.

I honestly do not get the point of this behavior. Surely its obvious I
am going to beat him through the next set of lights so there can be no
gain. on his part. Or he might actually hit us which would cost him
a lot. If he hurt Kath, a real lot. Its all loss and no gain.
And even if he is Chuck Norris and easily beats me to a bloody pulp when
I call him an [censored], he is still in the same bit of traffic, exactly in
the same place as if I had never ridden down that road. And he has to
    be aware of that.

What do you think? Traffic induced insanity?

Hmmm. I was in the city yesterday on Swanston St heading South when I
stopped for the lights at Collins St. I was on the left (in the marked
bicycle lane) waiting for the lights to change when a taxi pulled up on
my right, decided he wanted to turn left and pulled past me, turning
over and blocking the bike lane so I had to back up and pass him on the
right when the lights changed (as he still had to wait for pedestrians
    to cross).
I'm not entirely clear on who has right of way in this case (although I
would have thought it was me as I was at the intersection first) but it
    seemed a little rude.

Hey Tom. When I heard about the Mag Train wreck in Germany I thought about
you because your post some time ago was the first time I'd heard of it. I'm
still hoping for a coast to coast mag train that I could load up with my
SUV,cameras, bikes, kayaks, skis, and camping gear that would take me from
place to place and river to river. I hate to seem like a fun hog, but when
you've got it (you know what I mean) why not do it?

I see you and Ed are still holding down the fort here with a whole new cast
of semi-odd characters covering the usual subjects such as how to masturbate
    and other equally helpful ideas.

The Nitro Sled or whatever it is you linked to, looks to be a FWD Sunset
without an ingestible seat. I seem to recall pointing out that the Sunset
was neat bike, but really needed to be a FWD. I think you should get into
one of these things and post a ride report so I can tell if I was right
    about the FWD.

Tomorrow I'm off to Utah for three weeks of Moab, the Colorado River with
as many canyons as I can get to plus a few hot springs and such. Sure could
use a Mag Train. But until that day comes if you see a two car caravan
coming through your town looking like the Beverly Hillbillies headed west
    it's probably us.
