  1. Oooo, scary... I was following a new training DVD last night on the
Rollers and it wanted you to get outa the saddle. I've been training on
rollers for a few months now, but not outa the saddle... I gave it a
try... ended up on the floor twice 😄
It didn't stop me trying though. In order to stay upright I had to keep
my upper body super still and crouch so that I wasn't bouncing at all.
It was very different to being out of the saddle on the road.

Question: Is it worth me trying to master this? Or is it just a
    "Rollers Party Trick"?

    Interesting dat...

Tony Melcer took a whole lot of roadies and triathletes for a track
session and explained to us why he thought it was better to keep the
body still as it gives you more effective pull while still allowing you
to push harder, whereas bouncing and leaning focuses on the push. I
don't know if it's horses for courses or if people have studied it.
Different riders out of the saddle look very different, both for
    climbing and for flat sprints.

Hey, I can't remember the last time I trained indoors (bike, that is,
and yeah, that clarification is for Lotte's benefit!)

yeah, it's probably worth doing. Keeping your upper body
stable provides a solid platform for sprinting.

It's an excellent skill to have for when you are married with children
and start towing a trailer bike. Not being able to stand up and rock the
bike kills me on steep hills. I usually have to yell at my daughter to
pedal faster. She's good for a 10 metre surge so I have to time it just
    right.

I've got some rollers that I use when the weather is [censored] or to
warm up before a TT if it's too cold (eg Kings Park last month).

I can ride them one handed OK but there's no way at the moment I
could get out of the saddle. Or ride no hands.

So, who here can pedal rollers out of the saddle? It looks like
a skill I'll have to work on.

Can do no hands, putting your weight back makes that one relatively easy. Have done aerobars.

Not sure of the value of out of the saddle, but can do enough to adjust!

I've seen guys take off/put on a jersey. Thats skillz!

"Enough to adjust" - I know what you mean. This is what limits
my time on the rollers to around 30mins. I need to lift off the
saddle occasionally to get blood moving...

Me! I just finished another session of the same training DVD without
falling off. It felt easier than last time, so I guess it's just down
    to practise.
