Well, apparently that's not what happened. He was walking up from
behind Cheney who tracked a bird 180 degrees before firing. It was an
incredibly stupid mistake on Cheney's part. To use your terminology,
Cheney rotated 180 degrees from "downrange from his hunting blind" and
fired. They weren't in a blind, but they were "hunting" in a direction,
and Cheney turned around and fired back in the direction from which he
just came.

The stupidity is just stunning. Almost as stunning is how Cheney's crew
are trying to pass the blame. I almost hope he was drunk, because
that's the only way that I can understand such a stupid, gd, idiotic
lapse.

Imagine what would have happened if Al Gore had shot someone this
stupidly on a hunting trip back in the 90s.

They were shooting farm-raised quail, BTW, which is not really hunting,
it's just the wanton slaughter of small animals.

(I have no problems with hunting. Eat what you kill, kill only what you
will eat. Better karma than letting someone do it for you in a
slaughterhouse.)

Reminds me of the joke about the two

hunting. They get lost, and wander around for few hours. One guy says,

the disaster plan worked out after last time!), cumbersome and wasteful
federal authorities (make fire fighters sit trough sexual harrasment
seminars before the can go save people), and hysterical media reporting
3rd hand rumor as fact (snipers shooting at helicopters causing them to
be grounded and delay further help, killings in the dome, etc). All
these behaviors pre-date Bush 43 by a million years.

That isn't to say the Cheney shooting some guy wasn't an idiot move of
colossal proportions.
