  1. There have been so many school shootings, but this one really hits home. I
have worked long hours there in Blacksburg and Christiansburg and surrounds,
it is idyllic, especially in the spring. It is in the New River Valley, one
of the most beautiful places in the mountains of Virginia. It has a very
sweet small-town feel to it, and is among my favorite places.

OB food: I was amazed to see that fresh raspberries and blackberries were on
the local chain grocery store salad bar in Blacksburg the spring I was
there. They grow there and are in season now. I just paid about $4 for six
ounces of raspberries at my local Kroger.

And you thought you were being disengenous with you "OB food"

Look on the bright side: maybe the gunman picked off a few rednecks
or illegals or Muslims and so did us all a favor...

It was marked OT, indicating perfect manners from a long time usenet
poster. It's perfectly ok and natural to want to discuss something new
and unusual with people you know on a ng. Marking it OT and subject
header that you don't like is a hint to ignore it.

Have you ever seen fresh raspberries on a Kroger salad bar? I never had.

Now the count of the dead is up to 31, and who knows how many were
injured. It is just so unbelievable. I just can't understand why people do
things like this. And in a free society, you can't really stop them, that is
    the scary thing.

This is the man--Greg Morrow of Chicago IL-- who taunted another regular
poster when her brother-in-law, to whom she was very close, died. Let him
show his character. He posts with his real name, and is open about where he
lives, too. He's a racist, sexist pig--and those are his better qualities.

They could have been stopped by a CCW holder that was a good shot...

except that concealed handguns are not allowed on campuses.

Keeps the criminals safe ya know!

It feels to me, although very far away, similar to how it felt on
    9/11. So many broken hearts.

Can't even think of anything sympathetic enough to wish those
    relatives. Too much sadness.

Sometimes, you can stop them. Make it a serious felony to not keep guns
secure, and make sure the parents are charged, in cases where a kid got hold
of a gun. I don't know if that's the case here, but it has been in the past.
Raise the legal gun ownership age to 21. Raging hormones, and the stress of
high school or college? What a great combination.

Why are you shocked and appalled at such an event, especially
in a place like Virginia? After all, it's a state that is
home to all sorts of religio - fascistic wingnuts, one of those "God,
Guns, Gluts, & Glory" types of places. I'm
actually surprised that this type of incident doesn't happen
    there on a weekly basis...

I wonder what Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell will have to say
about this? Will they blame this incident on "Godless
Homosexuality" or "Hillary - type Feminists" or "Devilish
    Abortionists" or some such...???

Your pal "L" is a pretty thoroughly obnoxious character who was
looking to curry favour here by posting a TOTALLY off - topic
and tragic family matter...she lacked even the politesse to
    mark her initial post "OT".

Such a tactic is the oldest and SLEAZIEST trick in the Usenet book,
    it
hornswoggles NO one...I call it the "My Dead Puppy Defense", e.g.
someone obnoxious starts up a pity party for themselves, hoping
that it will deflect any present or future approbation of
    themselves...

"L" is a filthy lying scumbag - and so are YOU, cyberSQUAT! Best to
    read

and prevaricators and truth "fabricators"...REPENT, cyberSLOP...!!!

Makes no difference, if guns are not available legally they can EASILY
be found via the underground market...

Where do many of the illegal handguns in Chicawgo come from?
Mississippi mainly, you can buy guns down there almost as easily as
Pez dispensers. Every so often the CPD announces a big haul of guns
    they've confiscated from
gang - bangers and the like, these were fairly easily and
even legally obtained out - of - state, primarily in the
    Southron states...
