ULead Movie Factory - $50 ULead Video Studio - $100 Pinnacle Studio ~ $70 You can probably find a
copy of MGI VideoWave in the reject rack for $10 or so Adobe Premier if you have the $$ FilmGimp if
you run Linux If you have XP, MovieMaker (gag)

If you look around, you may find an old, free copy of AIST MovieXone. Quirky interface, but a lot of
features. ABC used to have a free tool available. ABC Videoroll. I may have a copy around.

How fancy are you wanting to get? I just used a few freeware programs that I got off vcdhelp.com -
virtualdub to cut out the segments I want, and TMPGenc to do a good job of MPEG encoding and dub in
audio. Part of the reason I use Virtualdub, also, is because my camera files are some sort of wierd
Quicktime AVI format, which a lot of software can't read. I end up putting the files in uncompressed
AVI format (huge) in between the two programs.

I've used Ulead's video software (I forget the name), and its pretty easy to use. Since it can't
read my camera's files, I have to first convert every video segment into uncompressed AVI format,
which is a pain. And its MPEG quality is terrible, so I still end up using TMPGenc to encode.

I recently picked up a copy of Broderbund's Movieshop for less than 10 bucks, and it seems pretty
easy to use and has transitions and all that stuff. I'd already video'd all the local trails, so I
haven't used it other than playing with it for 15 minutes or so. It reads my camera's AVI files too,
which is a plus. Since I'm not using it, if you want to try it I can send you the CD.

not very. I just want to pull some stills out and edit out the [censored]. These things aren't any where
worth putting to music.

is the MS movie maker *that* bad? It's free....

To simply edit the start and stop points of various clips and order them in a semi-meaningful
manner, MS MoviMaker should work just fine.

I go back and forth between Premier and Pinnacle Studio adn I find Studio very easy to use. I got
version 7.0 with my firewire card but picked up version 8 from Fry's (huge @ss electronics store
here in Southern CA but not sure if they're everywhere) for 50 bucks with a 50 dollar mail in rebate
so essentially free!

If you have the scratch to spend on something like adobe premiere, you may wanna check out
Sonic Foundrys' Vegas Video also. I used the audio version of vegas and i loved it. Very
intuitive and powerful.

I've looked at the demo version (fully functional, just puts a watermark on any output files) of
vegas Video and find it pretty straight forward and actually more powerful than Premiere. It has a
lot of built in effects that are add ins for Premiere that seem to make the package better straight
out of the box.

I'll second that, Virtualdub is a very solid little utility. Great for chopping the [censored] out.

I think it's alright. Especially for the price. Very easy to use. Premier sure does a lot more but
there's a lot more to learn with it. Movie Maker will have you making a movie with transitions,
sounds and eve effects in just a few minutes.
