  1. For all the people that complain about troll posts in this group...

Why is it when I expand "certain" troll threads here, I see a huge response
list? What ever happened to not feeding the troll? It's not like anything
you can say offers anything but fodder. A few aggro posts gives him grounds
    for further abuse.

Ignore him, or email him directly. My plonk list is overflowing.

If it's a Mike Vandeman post, it's usually crossposted to 5 or 6 newsgroups
so responses can come from other newsgroups, too.

But I don't understand it either. It's not only MV, but so many of the
regulars here keep replying. And for what? A bit of internal consolation?

I wish I could plonk entire threads automatically when begun by specific
    posters, you know?

Its an interesting idea, and probably feasible but maybe not practical.
Posts generally have a long string of references and I could see how
software could keep track of what post IDs a filtered user has used
recently. The problem is, a troll could just start a thread by replying to
one of the more popular posters (just so someone else would be the first
reference) and changing the subject line...and if you kill every thread
that the troll engages in, he could cause on-topic threads to land in
peoples' killfiles just by replying. More fun for the troll!

XRef filtering is actually quite effective. Trolls can't stand to limit
themselves to one newsgroup, and people who reply rarely trim.

Troll season? Is there a limit on the take?
It's not catch and release, is it?

Maybe it's finally time to put aside my hippie sensibilities and get
    myself a firearm!

Killfiling (filtering out) someone's posts is a sure sign that reading
what they have to say is really getting to the person setting up the
filter. Most people will admit this, but some people will killfile
someone else, all the while transparently claiming to not be bothered
    by
    their posts.

I am working on creating wildlife habitat that is off-limits to
humans ("pure habitat"😉. Want to help? (I spent the previous 8
years fighting auto dependence and road construction.)

That's making the assumption that everyone uses kill/plunk-files, or
that nobody filters strictly by criteria...

So no, I do not filter because I'm "disturbed" by what anyone has to
    say.
