From a long-time sunburn vet, two remedies:

    1. Noxema. *Not* the store brand-- it's just not the same.
Slather it on. The menthol coolness works wonders.

    2. Run a tub of warm water, add a half cup or so of baking
soda, swish it around and soak in it for a while.

If you're having trouble getting comfortable in bed, try
powdering the sheets a little, especially with something
mentholated (like Gold Bond). Also good for plain old hot,
humid nights even without a sunburn.

  4. Aloe vera. If you have an aloe vera cactus at home, cut off
a leaf, split it down the middle and apply the moist inner
part to your skin. Or buy it in a brown bottle at the
health food store. It goes on gloppy and works to heal you
a little faster. Really though, if you're red but don't
feel in terrible pain, your sunburn will heal in its own
time. Cool rags will help you feel better until you feel a
bit chilled and shivery. Then dive under the blankets. If
your symptoms are worse as in terribly chilled or truly
    awful pain, see a doctor.

Actually plain yogurt is a home remedy for sunburn. It is
supposed to promote early peeling. Same as with vinegar and
also black tea, both of these are also thought to promote
early peeling. Oil of cloves that well known toothache
remedy might work to reduce the pain, but that is just a
wild ass guess on my part. I personally jump in a bathtub
which has several asprins disolved in the water, to help
with the pain and burning sensation.

For immediqte releaf, soak in a tub of cold water. I also
get good results by spraying my sunburned areas with any
brand of sunburn spray that has aloe as a main ingredient. a

    Extra virgin olive oil.

"Baste with oil New Scientist vol 166 issue 2238 - 13 May
    2000, page 8

APPLYING virgin olive oil to your skin after sunbathing
protects you against skin cancer, claim Japanese scientists.
They have found that using it as an after-sun lotion slows
    tumour growth in mice.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight creates free radicals
which damage DNA in skin cells and trigger abnormal growth,
often leading to skin cancer. Antioxidants such as vitamin E
mop up these radicals and are thought to protect against UV
damage. So Masamitsu Ichihashi and his colleagues from the
Kobe University School of Medicine decided to find out if
olive oil, which is a potent source of antioxidants,
    provides UV protection.

They gave hairless mice three UV sessions a week under a
sunlamp. Five minutes after the treatment, they painted
their skin with either regular or extra virgin olive oil.
After 18 weeks, control mice started to grow skin tumours,
and mice treated with regular olive oil fared little better.
But mice daubed with virgin olive oil took an extra six
weeks to show any sign of cancer. What's more, their tumours
were smaller, less frequent and there was less DNA damage to
    skin cells.

The researchers are quick to point out that olive oil isn't
a sunscreen. But they claim that rubbing on olive oil after
sunbathing could help protect skin from UV damage."

Vinegar has worked in our family for over 50 years.. But, it
must be applied ASAP after noticing you are sunburned. It
doesn't help much if applied 12 to 24 hours after being
sunburned. More than one application may be necessary, 15 to
30 minutes apart. It takes the heat right out of it and
minimizes blistering and peeling. Aloe Vera, or some other
skin conditioner applied the next day helps to put moisture
    back in the skin.

Very strong tea, lukewarm, with compresses. The tannic acid
and theobromine in tea helps to cool sunburn and compounds
called catechins help to repair skin damage caused by
    ultraviolet rays.

You should always have an aloe plant at home. Break off a
stem/leaf whatever the growing thing is called and
squeeze the pulp onto the sunburned part of your body.
Gently rub it around. Apply as needed. Most sunburns only
need one application for releif. Trust me on this. It
really works. And it's even better on hot oil burns, but
    that's another story.

  14. First I suggested aloe vera. Then I read everyone else's
suggestions. Some of them strike me as something that might
work. Others, I think are a bad idea. Anything that's oily
would work to keep heat in, not let it out. I decided aloe
vera worked when, years ago, neighbors used it, and I didn't
think it was possible. It seemed so weird. So I got a
sunburn and put aloe vera on my left shoulder and arm and
back where I could reach. I left my right side alone. After
one day, my left was peeling which I took to be a bad thing
since my right wasn't. Two days later, my right started to
peel too. That's when I realized that the aloe vera had
    speeded the healing.

I started using aloe vera on all burns after that. I
recommend it as one natural remedy that works. I also
started noticing that I came down with sneezing attacks one
day after getting sunburned. I thought this was an immune
response until an acupuncturist told me that people who have
pollen allergies are often allergic to aloe vera. So I
started being more careful in the sun, stopped using aloe
    vera and haven't been sneezing.

All this gives me an idea. Instead of choosing one
person't suggestion for treating sunburn, why not section
off your body and try them all? Yogurt on square one. Tea
on square two. Aloe vera on square 3, etc. Then get back
to us and tell us what works. And recall, all this about a
mild sunburn that gets red or sore (if your natural skin
color is dark, red will be relative), peels in a slight
gossamer way, stops hurting and gets dark (whatever is
darker for your natural color). Anything worse than that
    should go to a doctor.

Take a bath in baking soda; one cup per bath full.
However it's best used ASAP the overexposure. Might still

Oh yes. Tried and true sunburn remedy. We went to Daytona
and sometimes Lauderdale every spring break from junior
year in high school 'till sophomore year in college. We
roasted on the beaches. In order to drink and carouse all
night, relief from sunburn was sought. Noxema quickly
    became the #1 favorite.
