I have just been into the ng on Google Groups to check for some old info and spotted there have been 5 responses to my original post, ( Thanks KRO, Richard and Chris ). the point of this post is that none of these response have ever appeared on my newsreader. There are also lots of other posts and threads I have never seen appear on my laptop. I am connecting via Tiscali on a PAYG dial in tariff. Does anybody have any idea why this should be or should I just dump Tiscali and use another ISP ? All responses appreciated and hopefully I will be able to see them !

Well you could dump Tiscali, since they are pretty NAFF, however it's also possible to just ignore their news (NNTP) server and use the free German one (news.individual.de? Something like that - google for it) which is pretty sane (about text only groups), although it does insist you post from a real email address of some sort.

If you're using - or attempting to use - Tiscali's apology of a news server, then YES. Tiscali as an ISP aren't as bad as I'm prone to describing them (that's who I dial up through as well); however their newsfeed is total rubbish. My ISP before Tiscali took them over was LineOne, who were very good. Enter: Tiscali, stage left, and LineOne went down the slippery slope. About the only good thing is that their dial up is reliable. My suggestion would be to keep Tiscali if you're happy with them as an ISP, but use an independent news server. The one I recommend is http://www.news.individual.net/ It's otherwise known as 'the German one' and is free to use. You have to register, and then they get back to you with a password and username, and the service is second to none. They don't carry any newsgroups whose names start with the string 'free', so don't expect to see any Freeserve groups there; neither do they carry binary NGs. However, if that doesn't bother you, give them a go. You've got nothing to lose and I've yet to come across any complaints about them. -- Fran If you need my email address please ask.

Tiscali's news server is totally up the fritz at the moment(*). I recommended a friend move to http://news.individual.net but he reports he is still waiting for an authorisation email after nearly a week.
(*) Twas ever so, and not just for Tiscali. News is usually officially unsupported by most ISPs who work on a "best endeavour" basis, and it is clear in many cases this amounts to not much more than giving the server a kick on the way to the coffee machine. My ISP subcontract to gradwell.net, who run a very good (text-only) server. I have not yet spotted a missing post (although I realise this may sound like a tautology).

You're welcome, Graham. Your experience echoes mine when I first changed over. CIS.DFN.de (as it was called then) produced a whole load of posts on various newsgroups where LineOne, who'd just been taken over by Tiscali, had produced hardly any. One of 'my' groups was fairly high traffic, so I knew there was something amiss. I still dial up through Tiscali, since I have no quarrel with their basic dial up service; however I wouldn't touch their appalling newsfeed now with a bargepole.
