    This is completely OT. If you don't like it, don't read it.

    I just want to rant about the clots that administer the VED, and since
    someone is nearly always banging on about road tax here...

    I've just renewed my VED. You get a form V11 sent through the post.
    It has a reference number you need to type in to the interwebby thing
    to pay your VED online. To quote from the web site: "The Vehicle
    Licence Application is blue and white in colour and has a reference
    number on the front in a yellow box on the right hand side. This
    reference number can be used to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN
    on our website or using our telephone service."

    Except it doesn't. It has a yellow box alright, exactly where the
    picture on the interwotsit shows it. Unfortunately, they've taken the
    reference number out to make space for something else.

    Make space for what? you may ask.

    I shall tell you:
    An exhortation to use the interwotnot to pay your VED.

    Yep, thats right. They've taken off the information you need to pay
    the VED online in order to fit on an advert encouraging you to pay the
    VED online. What sort of clot comes up with an idea like that?

    It makes TrollB look rational by comparison.

    well, yes maybe however I had the same issue; it's also possible (it
    worked for me, YMMV) to use your vehicle reg no on the CED site as well.
    Better than a walk down the PO to mix with the Great Unwashed wot??

    We've been paying ours on-line and not found any problems.

    I did two cars last month - one renewal had the reference number and the
    other had the "you may be able to tax your vehicle online" note. That
    made sense, as the one without a reference number is on a SORN and
    doesn't have a computerised MOT, but when I went to tax the other one
    online the reference number wasn't recognised. :-\

    I had something similar last year - there was no reference number, just
    an empty yellow box, but a bit of paper in there telling me how
    wonderful it was to pay on line. There was a reference number the year
    before, so it's not like it was because of a lack of computerised MOT or
    anything.

    But - you can still pay online (or you used to be able to - it seems to
    change every time!) using the registration number and some reference
    number on the log book, or whatever it's called these days. That's what
    I did last year, and it all worked fine. Saved having the Great
    Unwashed Experience :-)

    I have to renew again next month, so I look forward to seeing how
    they've broken it, sorry - improved the system, this time.

    For the benefit of future taxees, I have determined that if you
    find the bar-code marked "For PO use only", and find the string of
    digits under that, the reference number you need to use the online
    system is digits 8 to 23 of that. Note that the PO only number is in
    groups of four, but the 16 digits you need is NOT four groups - it's
    offset from the groups.

    Or you can just forget all that and use the vehicle registration number
    option.
