    I occasionally get posts rejected by the News Server because Line 3 - the references line in the
    headers - is too long. The message is something like
    411: Line 3 too long. This is a failing of Outhouse Depress if the thread is getting long. MS have
    never bothered to fix it but I came across the following which works just fine:

    Save the message to the desktop (File/Save As/select desktop location.) Open it with Notepad (Rt
    Click/Open With/Notepad). In the third line (References) delete everything except the first and last
    reference in line 3. Save. Open (double click desktop icon (it will automatically open in OE) and
    click Send.

    Wouldn't a better fix be simply junk Outlook and get a proper newreader?

    Nothing going wrong - its only very occassional but if you look at the header on this message
    (Cntl-F3 in OE) you will see there are three references in line 3. If the thread gets very deep this
    can go over the 998 character line limit on many news servers - see for example
    news.individual.netfaq.html OE does nothing to prevent this with the result it will
    happen occassionally to anyone who uses OE for Usenet postings on a standards compliant server

    Does/could the "QuoteFix" program do anything to help? It fixes various other bugs in OE.

    RFC 2822 allows header lines to be broken in two, provided the second, third etc. lines of a header
    have a bit of whitespace on the front. So, you could rewrite

    |References: <[email hidden]> <[email hidden]>

    as:

    |References: <[email hidden]>
    | <[email hidden]>

    if the "|" was your text editor's left margin. More deeply interesting and profound stuff at
    <http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2822.html>, section
    2.2.3.

    This may of course not work: this is OE we're talking about here, and it could quite easily unwrap
    the changes you just made and then blindly try to send them off again. And fail miserably. In that
    case, I'd suggest keeping the OP's message-id, and any subsequent one whose texts appear in the
    outgoing message, quoted. I think that's in the spirit of the RFCs...
