May not the very cheapest but OneTel is reliable and flexible*. I've tried quite a few dial-up ISPs and this company is the best of the bunch, with minimal downtime and connection difficulties. No spam. Usenet is good via the free news server I use (see www.individual.net) with Outlook Express or any news reading software you like.
* eg. you can easily & quickly switch between anytime, various times and pay-as-you-go; and pay bills in a variety of ways.

I don't know how it rates for cheapness, but I've always had good service from Easynet.

I think they've stopped providing newsgroup access now though which is also true of sister company UK Online. A friend works at easynet and even he has to pay extra for newsgroup access. I used to use the easynet news servers myself (although I'm actually a ndo user) but access stopped on jan 1st. Are you still getting news server access from easynet?

It may be worth getting a (free) account with news.individual.net and then you don't need to depend on your ISP anyway.

For dial-up, i think you will find almost any *real ISP reliable. Clara Net get my vote. I've had one problem with them (recently) in the last few years.
I use them for domain hosting too and have no problems.
Packages (ie pay £x and surf all day) are available.

Well I've certainly heard nothing from them and haven't had any problems with news server access so far. I do have broadband access rather than using dial-up, don't know if that makes any difference? -- Brian G

Forget all of the above rubbish; fingers in gear long before brain. I use news.individual.net for news purposes so I've no idea whether easynet is still o.k.

Two who get consistently good ratings are Plusnet and Nildram. I use the latter and they have been pretty good.
