I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I only tried this out a
few days ago and I'm extremely impressed. It's a photoreal download of the
Canary Islands (5 of the 7 islands), which includes a 19m terrain mesh,
photographic scenery, 3D autogen scenery on top, and excellent night
lighting. And best of all, it's free!

The download is 240MB and it's in three parts. It takes about 15 minutes
to install. There is a new version due out anytime (with all the islands),
but don't bother waiting, download this version now!

I knew the islands were volcanic, but having never been there I didn't
realise just how rugged they were. The area around Mount Teide on Tenerife
is really good of course, and La Palma has some brilliant scenery. But
every island is interesting in it's own way. Gran Canaria has a seemingly
endless supply of long deep valleys that are great for practicing your
high speed military low flying in. I spent quite a while flying through
them at 500 knots in my Eurofighter.

Needless to say, there are quite a few Eurofighter wrecks scattered around
the Canaries now... :-)

Anyone who's got FS2004 should download this scenery now, if you haven't
already.

El Teide is indeed impressive. People often think of the Canaries as
sun and sangria but there's lots of good scenery and "winter" walking.
The trick is to stay in mountain lodges or the capitals. A 4x4 is
often a good idea, although they do say "a hire car can go anywhere"

There is also the matter of the almost permanent inversion!

fuerte' and lanzarote are dessert, some grow fruit. Bananas for
instance.

They seem to be showing the whole islands and the main geographical
feature. La Palma looks good! I think you must have a more recent
version than me, the clouds look pretty "right".

Which real-time weather are you using? The default weather in the game? If
so, that's not very good, you really need to get hold of Active Sky. The
difference is stunning, and much more realistic. But if you plan to get FSX,
it may be worth holding out and getting the new Active Sky for that instead.
Although I haven't got a powerful enough computer for FSX yet, I'm loathe to
spend money on any more FS2004 addons now.

Anyway, I've often had inversions with Active Sky during early morning
flights around the UK.

Glad to hear it. I'm not sure if I have a different version, I'm using 1.0.
If mine looks better it could be down to a number of things. I just bought a
new graphics card, so maybe that's made a difference. Also, the overall look
of the scenery is affected by the weather conditions, so maybe Active Sky
6.5 is making a difference there?

Then there's the graphics settings in flight sim. Have you got extended
terrain textures turned off? That makes distant scenery look better, but
closer scenery look worse. Also, have you set your config file for 19m
terrain resolution (21) rather than the default 38m resolution (20)?

Maybe you were just flying at the wrong times then?

Have you downloaded the latest update? It's up to 6.5 now.

Also, how have you set the weather themes that come with it? I've set all of
mine to "Weather-influenced" so it chooses appropriate themes to match the
current conditions. This gives a lot more variety so the weather always
looks different. Different colour sunsets for example.

The cloud on La Palma builds up during the day the inversion tends to be in
the late afternoon.

(Same timezone as UK)

Was up at the Roque de los Muchachos and watched it come in below me in
about 10 minutes.

It then you see why they built the telescopes up there.

Think I will stay with flying with Iberia from Madrid! Not an easy runway to
land on when the wind keeps changing direction
in Real Life.
Having the scenery already installed I was very impressed this time we
landed to see how real the airport look.
Saying that there is alot of building work going on so I don,t know if they
will update it or leave as is.
As you takeoff will see on the left the port and the Capital Santa Cruz de
la Palma.
Left hand side of the runway is banana plantations.

Nice view of the Caldera de Taburiente and also along the ridge consisting
of Cumbre Nueva and Cumbre Vieja
Notice that the inversion is starting to form in Caldera.
Also where the cloud is coming up on the ridge on the left (Cumbre Nueva) it
is quite common to have the cloud coming over the ridge like Table Mountain
in Cape Town

The Caldera de Taburiente with Bejenado 1844m in the foreground.
We did a really nice walk in May where my friend dropped us off ,we walked
into the centre of the Caldera where you can camp
then walked down the river mostly along the river bed which was dry in
places.
By the way it a no fly zone and they use ATR42 and ATR72 for inter island
trips. B1900D for El Hierro and La Gomera.

Looking down Laderas de Amagar to the coast. Los Llanos de Aridane the city
on the left
actually larger than the capital mainly as this is the hotter side of the
island above the city is more banana plantations.

Can,t help with the other pictures I did pass through Tenerife the first
time we went but only saw the motorway going between the North and South
Airport
and was not that impressed with the island.

La Palma is know as "Isla Bonita" The Beautiful Island and island life tends
to be layed back and slow. Saying that we noticed in a year that things were
changing
with alot of building work going on. But it still is very good for walking.

Um, I'm not sure if that's the best way. Do you mean the options in the
weather program? There's a separate weather graphics program too. That's
where I set them.

I can't check at the moment since I've -re-installed flight sim on a
separate OS install on a clean drive D. There's a few different weather
graphics settings and each one of them has a "wx-influenced option".
