LOL I actually was just pulling weeds off the side of my old house. I
didn't realize the vine was poison ivy, but knew I touched some back there
and then got sidetracked afterwards and forgot to wash up right away. I
have learned a valuable lesson to say the least.

Poison ivy is as strong in the cold days of fall and winter is it is in the
summer. Oh well, live and learn.

Avoid any "cures" involving bleach or harsh chemicals that cause pain. I
made the mistake of believing the bleach treatment, and there was a long
residual period of recurring ivy-like skin irritation for months afterword.

It does go away, but almost at its own slow pace.

Oh, so sorry to hear this Curt. It sounds bad, but could be worse.

Here's a funny story:

I know a man who is an avid canoeist. He paddles during the colder months.
During one river trip, he used the little boys room in the woods, peeling off
his wetsuit. When he pulled the tight wetsuit back up, he didn't realize he'd
collected some poison ivy into it. So he sat in poison ivy for hours and ended
up with a very nasty rash on his butt and privates.

Funny, but not to him. No one who knows him dares to bring it up!

After you get it on you its spreads to anything you touch with any
contaminated body part so I'll bet he got it on his hand and rubbed his eye
and maybe scratched something else or had to go to the bathroom. My son had
it once and it was a nightmare.

Keep that spreading factor in mind and do not dry any places that don't have
it with the same part of the towel you dried the places that do. And wash
your clothes towels etc by themselves. Its especially bad if its weeping as
the transfer of moisture is an ideal method of spreading it. Also do not
forget and rub that eye - if you aren't careful you can track it all over
your self.

Goodness. I think I will stick to Aveedo cream. I will say a hot shower
seems to be the best solution for this case. I shower and keep making the
shower hotter until I had enough. The swelled areas itch unbelievably, but
after I am out of the shower there is not itching at all for like 8 or so
hours. I can't believe that works, but it does so far.

The swelling is going down a bit now finally. It has been over 3 days now
and I just can't believe how severe this is. I should have taken a picture
of this. It looks like I went a few rounds with Hollyfield or Lewis. Funny
thing, my doctor said the same thing. Kind of funny and I needed the joke.

Oh, your poor thing. I've never had it that bad but have been miserable
with it before. Here's hoping the prednisone works so you can start getting

My Son, 13, gets it once per summer and it is bad. usually needs prednisone
but last year we started spraying it (his legs, probably not too feasible
for a face) all over his rash and it really helped. seals it. use an
ozone-killing aerosol for the best relief.

There is some stuff called Zanfel (found in Google) that supposedly works
well with bad cases. I haven't used it yet but it looks promising (and was
pitched by Paul Harvey so it must be true <G>😉...

My ophthalmologist gets his hair standing on end when you mention Paul
Harvey because Harvey pushes a "multivitamin" for the eyes. The doc says it
is garbage and not needed. I think he is mad because he looked at Harvey as
some sort of straight shooter and now this guy is pushing quack
medications....kind of the feeling I got when I heard Bill O'Reilly pushing
the weight loss pills.

I got a nasty case about 5 years ago. I read stuff all over the net
about what to do, and the best thing I found that really helped was to
take extremely hot showers (at least get it on the rash.) This helps
you release antihistamines which give you relief for hours after.

While in the shower, use a gentle dish detergent (or anything that
cuts oil) and scrub that all over the rash with a bath scrubby. The
oils can get deep in the skin and keep coming up onto the surface
until they're all gone, continuing to irritate you - like how
Frontline works on dogs except itchier. 😉 The detergent cuts the
oil as it resurfaces.

I did that until I got my Zanfel in the mail. It works in the same
way the detergent did, but a lot faster (hmm, not quite as fast as
they said, but it was still super fast!) I'd recommend also trying
that, as well.

BTW, you can't spread it with fluids that weep from the rash or by
touching other things after you've washed the area, but you can
recontaminate yourself with unwashed clothes, etc.
