  1. Sorry, no scanner, but it's short so I'll just type it out.

Seen in this months Mobility Today magazine:

    -------------
Q, Is it just me or do there seem to be more speed cameras about?

A, Probably not, but the use of mobile units is increasing. Paul Smith,
founder of the safespeed.org.uk tells us that the Government have delayed
reporting how many speeding tickets have been handed out to speeding
    motorists.

According to Smith's latest statistics, mobile speed cameras now generate
more than half of all speeding fines in the UK.

He told us: "Most motorists know where the fixed speed cameras are located
so the camera partnerships have increased activity of mobile units. They are
harder to spot and turn up in the most unlikely places, so it's no surprise
they are keeping quiet. The motorist is being ripped off with no genuine
    improvement in road safety."

He estimates that fines from mobile cameras are likely to have grown by at
least 40% in the past two years.

Here at Mobility today we have no sympathy for Mr Smith, no empathy with
his views or those of speeding motorists. They are breaking the law and are
probably the same people who park illegally in Blue Badge bays.
    --------------

    Two points;

1, Lousy grammar, but you can't argue with the sentiment.

2, If these mobile units are to be found "in the most unlikely places" and
they are managing to do such a good job of catching speeding drivers,
doesn't this mean that the drivers are speeding in the most unlikely places?

Yeah... Just think how many speeding drivers the police would catch if
they put them in the most /likely/ places!

If they are really meant to be revenue-raising devices, the police are
surely missing a trick. Talk about money for old rope...

It might be worth writing to them to point out that they are almost
certainly right about the blue badge bays, as Smith is on record as
saying he can't see why disabled people should get special treatment
and sees nothing wrong with parking in blue badge bays.

Don't get me started on the shamefulness of drivers who use disabled
    spaces,
leaving genuinely disabled people unable to park!!!

    Why? Are you genuinely disabled?

Personally I don't see why disabled folk should get special treatment.

If it goes on like this we'll just have to cripple everyone to bring
them down to the level of the disabled - it's only fair.

That's only true if Smith is representative of speeding motorists in
    general.

I hate to look like I am having any sympathy for that vile individual but I do think there are too many disabled parking bays in a typical supermarket. At our local Asda there are loads of them. Maybe local disabled people get together to do a synchronised shopping spree? I think they race each other up the aisles on their wheelchairs. (shame on me)

I never park in them by the way.

  7. That reminds me. I went on that man's website and was amazed that people didn't think speeding was serious!

I think your average Paul Smith supporter is also the type who thinks the police 'should get after real criminals.' Well considering we all have to hear about how someone has been raped or murdered everyday whilst we eat our dinners then we can safely assume that these are real criminals and more to the point we should all be shocked and horrified that one person has died unnaturally as they tell us we should on the news and in the papers.

So when you consider the fact that 3500 people are killed a year by motorists, which is considerably more than the mere 100 killed by murderers and 600 odd raped people, then we should conclude that the police are being asked by the Paul Smith types to go after the biggest criminal gangs in the UK. Forget the Crips or the Bloods these scumbags are the Motorists and they're everywhere! Be worried. Very Worried. They dont even stop at the children

It's just as well there are loads of them, since half of them will be used
by able-bodied drivers anyway! ISTR someone posting on here about rilling
one such offender; whose response was "I had to park here -- all the other
spaces are full and no-one was using it."!

I noticed yesterday that Kent County Council have launched an anti-speeding
campaign. The billboard features a request for motorists: 'Please don't
speed.' Interestingly, we don't see anti-drug or anti-burglary posters
couched in quite such polite terms!

They generally turn up in the same places just on random days and
times. The locations are well advertised in the local papers i(round
here they are anyway) and I think there's even a website telling you
    where they can be found!

The reason the camera was plonked in the position it was is CLEAR. It

is not about safety. It is about racking up money in the bank.

In that case, simply plonk one at the bus depot at the bottom of Anlaby Road
flyover and watch the money flood in. Come to think of it, put one in Anlaby
Road bus lane every evening and double your money. Then you could go down
Willerby Road and Spring Bank West in the dark and collect a fine from
everyone parking on the road with no lights on.

No, if it was about making money, there wouldn't be a big double paged
spread in the paper *telling* you where they are going to be, regular alerts
    on Radio
Humberside, plus big signs saying "Speed Cameras" with a picture of a camera
next to it. The fixed camera in Spring Bank is bright yellow. How many clues
do people need, for heaven's sake?

They are both 40 mph limit roads and therefore:

223: All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a
lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph.

Unless the speed limit is greater than 30mph:

223: All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or
a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph. Law RVLR reg
    24

There's a good income to be had even in a 30 area though:

222: You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction
of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space. Laws CUR reg 101
    & RVLR reg 24

That reminds me of a newspaper story a while ago. Some snotty old bag rang
up the police and reported that there was a gang of youths in her street
milling about one night, offences were occurring and she demanded that the
police come and sort it out. When the police arrived, there was no signs of
the youths, only a street full of Mercs, Beemers and 4X4s, most of them
facing the wrong way. The police then did their job...

There must be a bit more context to this, otherwise it would be illegal
for me to park my vehicle (bike) in a lay-by without leaving the lights
on it in the middle of the day...

I think it has to be dark first for you to be required to display parking
lights! The rule is a bit out of context, it comes under the heading
"Parking at night" in the HC.

I saw one of those ads in Margate at the weekend. I was squinting so
hard to make out the words "please don't speed", plastered up there in,
ooh, what could it be - 8pt type? - that I nearly drove into the back of
    the car in front.

No, but nor do "they" have a rota to ensure that they don't accidentally
all turn up at the same time.

I have a lot of sympathy for the disabled. What bothers me is how
apparently easy it is to get a blue badge - my wife's cousin has one and
she is perhaps the least deserving case you could imagine.

Is there a bit of context about vehicles being specifically motor
