OT: Oven trouble

Repair the unit - doubles are very good ( no GREAT) for Family gatherings &

I live alone. I enjoy using a convection oven (part of my stove) for baking
and roasting. But for family traditional get togethers I use the large
counter-top Combo microwave convection oven as well. See the thing is even
though they cook faster and tastier foods the convection ovens are a tad
smaller in size than conventional ovens. So getting a large roasting pan
and several casserole dishes in one convection oven is impossible.

The combo oven is also my largish toaster oven as well, for those times I
cook up a pre-frozen meal or do the 1 dish/pan chicken breast waltz, etc...

This doesn't stop me from owning additional cooking mediums such as electric
steamers and stand alone rotissierre units, etc...

I only use the double oven a couple times a year, so I wondered if I'd miss
it. This is good to know.

How about just getting the old oven fixed? probably just needs a
couple of new thermostats, probably user-serviceable.

Yes quite, I was a bit unclear what the OP was asking. From the
symptoms its likey to be oxidised stat contacts, so should be poss to
just clean those up rather than replacing it, if you know what to do.
Should cost you all of nothing.

Obviously get info on what and how to do first, and ensure power is off
- I say that as I dont know you at all, for all I know you might be as
crazy as me.

If you have the kind of double oven I think you have, you're gonna be
stuck if you try to replace it - nobody makes anything like it any
more. I'm in the same boat, more or less. I have a 23 year old Caloric
36" double oven range (gas). I love it and use it both ovens
constantly. I have replaced the igniters on both ovens and the broiler
more times than I can count in the past 23 years. But they don't seem
to make the igniter for the broiler any more. I just replaced it about
a month ago and it gave out after maybe 2 uses. It doesnt' seem to get
hot enough to light the igniter that will open the gas valve.
Something like that.

I've been looking at what could replace it, and there just isn't
anything. I only have about 40" of space for the unit, so a big Wolf
or Viking double oven is out (not to mention how expensive they are).
Maytag makes the Gemini oven, and Jenn-Air has a knockoff of it (I
think GE Monogram does, too). But it's awkwardly designed and there's
a major flaw with the broiler. Seems the oven had a habit, when
heating the broiler, of blowing the oven door open when the broiler
ignited. In order to "fix" this problem, they re-designed the broiler
so you have to heat the upper oven to 450 first, THEN switch to the
broiler element, then wait while it heats up. Which means it takes a
good 15-20 minutes before the broiler could even be ready to start
cooking. There are other design features that are awkward, to say the
least.

I've pretty much resigned myself to buying a standard single oven
range and then a good countertop convection oven which I would mount
in a cabinet over the range. I think that's the closest I'll be able
to get to the configuration I have now, and which I dearly love.

Sigh. I hate it when things change like this.

Get the double oven and get an OVER THE RANGE microwave. Your counter
space will be freed up and you will have the convenience of 2 ovens. As
long as I am spending 'your money' {:-) , you might as well make one of
the ovens a convection oven. You only go around once, enjoy it.

Double ovens typically consist of two rather smallish ovens. What you
need to do first is think about the age of this oven... if more than
ten years old I'd recommend replacement rather than repair. What you
replace with depends almost entirely on your budget and kitchen
configuration.

I would avoid putting a microwave over the range if there's a reasonble
alternative. It'll get a lot of moisture there and you're risking
eventual problems with the electronics. You might get some fireworks
too if you run it while it's wet.

I've seen over the range microwaves and they have the hood/fan/light

Repair is not an option. I looked into it about 3 years ago when husband
broke the knob off the front that controls E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G... oven
cleaner, timer, clock etc. It would have cost about half what it would cost
to replace the both double ovens. So, I held off. I'm a muller... spell
check says that's not a word. I like to mull things over. OK for a very
long time.

Now both ovens run very hot then they run really really hot then they are
normal. I put an oven thermometer in there to try and bake something. Then
I watch an episode of "Good Eats" and he says to NEVER trust your oven
always have a thermometer in there. Here I thought one could until it had
problems.

So, I am definitely replacing them. One bad thing I've gotten use to is the
size of the ovens. They are the small ones. I've measured to see if there
is room to put in a bigger one and there is not enough room. I had problems
when I first moved here with pans being too big. I finally got rid of all
of them after I filled up a jelly roll pan with parchment and angel food
cake batter. I was so mad at myself that I had to redo the whole damn thing
I pulled every too big pan out and chucked it on the spot.

I'll have to fill you guys in as I start shopping and trying to decide what
to do. I had wondered about convection ovens whether they were worth while.
I don't know anyone that has one.
