Hits". Funny, I didn't see Deny Terrio (or Merv Griffin) on the
cover... How does this relate? The Beastie Boys are mountain bikers,
even though there aren't many mountains in Brooklyn. Sorni, Chip and
any others who are joining us tomorrow in LoSoCal will more than
likely get No Sleep 'ill Brooklyn.

On that note, I noticed that the CBR has a comparatively loose chain.
Obviously the drive sprocket (not sure of the name right now) and the
swingarm pivot aren't in the same place, so chain tension will constantly
change. There's supposed to be 1.5" of chain slack or something, but is
that when the bike is unloaded? Does chain tension increase with suspension
travel? I just want to make sure that it's not too loose. I guess
derailment is a harder thing to do with how wide these chains are...

Yes, chain slack reduces with increased loading; that's why I have a strict
"no fat chick" rule.

I believe the manufacturers spec the chain tension based on it not being
loaded, because few would go to the trouble of cinching down the suspension.
Verify in your manual; my FZ-1 manual simply states to place the bike on the
center stand and spin the wheel until the chain is it's tightest (chains
aren't perfectly linear) then adjust.

Probably more important for chain wear and quiet operation is proper
alignment. Assure the adjustment marks on both sides agree, and if possible
verify the accuracy of the alignment marks using a yardstick or something
placed on both sprockets when the chain is off.

Rare but not impossible for you squids 😉

As with a bicycle, it's best to replace the whole chain and sprocket set at
the same time.

Finally, if your bike has an O-ring chain, read up on it's proper
maintenance. It's not the same as a bicycle chain.

I won't recommend a lubricant as my asbestos suit is at the cleaners.

I never had chain problems when I had a motorcycle. It ain't like
they're being shifted from cog to cog.
