  1. New York State runs the Empire States games for the Physcially Challenged twice a year for nearly 20
years. We have been attending for over ten years.

My YS enters three wheelchair races (40, 60 100), two throwing events, and a wheelchair slalom. We
have a great time attending and have made many friends over the years.

One of the friends we made was Kimmie and her parents. This was a loving family, and we looked
forward to seeing them every year at the Games. We knew that as soon as Kimmie saw us, we were in
    for a great big hug.

Last year Kimmie was not feeling well at the time of the games, but she entered her usual events,
and gave her maximum effort. And, of course, we were always greated with a great big hug.

We arrived at the games early Friday morning....by mid-morning we felt that there was something
amiss...but could not put our finger on it....

Yesterday, after YS completed the 60M wheelchair race, we met Kimmie's parents...and looked
    for Kimmie...

Her parents told us that Kimmie died last year, just a few days after the games from undiagnosed
stomach cancer. She was peaceful until the end...

No more hugs from Kimmie...and the Games will never be quite the same...

  2. I am sorry to hear that. Nothing worse than losing a child. I know it's hard for Kimmie's parent to
come to the games without their daughter. I hope that Kimmie's parents are able to find peace. At
least, I am sure, they found plenty of hugs.

  3. Kimmie will no doubt be remembered by all whose lives she touched. How sad for her parents.....

  5. Oy...

I hope that her family and friends will find some comfort in knowing that she wouldn't have been a
hugger if she hadn't received lots of love.

  6. Sorry to hear that Mark. Take care, and love for you and yours.

  7. Qute true.

One of the reasons we spent the weekend with them every year was purely selfish.

Being around them made me feel better. I told them that.
