I just switched News group service after a week of trying to figure out why I couldn't access the news server. Anyway. I just cancel my GigaNews service, great service btw, and deleted that account. Now every message that was in my alt.amb account is gone; not one archive. I remember this same thing happened a few years ago, but I can't remember what I did to fix it, or even if I did.
Anyone have any advise? My reader is Opera.

Highlight all alt.amb messages in Trash folder >>> click undelete... now if I remembered that 10 mintues ago! I think there is another method by deleting the index mail folder, so Opera has to reset itself and re-download all messages, but it's too dangerous; choose the wrong Index file and you can kiss your received pop email goodbye.

Ouch, mail shouldn't be mixed with usenet that way. I tried Opera for a bit for usenet and that type of stuff freaked me out.

Yeah, it is a little freaky, but Opera has too many good features. I've tried many other browser/NG readers, but I keep coming back to Opera. _____ Slack

That's one of the reasons I rarely post/read here anymore... I switched to Qwest, which has pay-to-play NGs and have to rely on Google for access. I'll occasionaly check here, but nothing is as usable as a standard newsreader.

you can get a great news subscription for about $5/ month, that's less than the cost of two espressos. I decided it was worth that much, for me.

Pay to Play since when? I use qwest and don't pay any service fees.

-no kill files - web interface sucks.
"sucks" means it's cumbersome and slow, and hard to configure. With a proper newsreader, heck even with the one that comes with OE, you can filter by poster, subject, or key words. You can make it so things you've read don't show up. You can flag topics.
I find using google groups to be an incredibly painful experiece. The web interface that comes with my newsguy account is significanly better, even for a web interface.

to the right of the search box is an "advanced search" link which accomplishes all of the previously mentioned search/sort functions. You can also flag your posts to be deleted after a certain amount of time. . .
Thought I'd take you up on Google groups and give it a try, besides, I don't have a choice right now till my ISP can figure out why my password is getting blocked.
I don't see anywhere to delete threads, but I have two additions to the hate list:No spell check (I need it :-P ) No quote snippage possible.
These two are worse than the other previous mentioned short-comings.

Doesnt seem much point to that. The next person who feels an urgent need to air his views will simply repeat the very text you didnt want to see in the first place.

Trolls habitually cross-post, and most people just reply without trimming the newsgroups. If you want to eliminate the troll threads, find a newsreader that will allow you to filter out threads crossposted to newsgroups that are unrelated to mountain biking, like sci.environment or rec.bicycles.recumbant.
