Hey all -- I'm not invisible (like Nancy), but I think my newsfeed is funky nonetheless. I see only 29 new posts since yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, and even less than that for Saturday. RFC is usually a lot busier than this. Am I not getting all the articles, or is everyone off cooking and whatnot... :-)

Or cough up your 10 Euros/year and register with News Individual Net <http://news.individual.net/> and enjoy the best damn newsfeed available on the planet today. (No good if you're into binaries though.)

news.individual.net - about $14 for a year - a good deal, and much easier than chasing free news servers, IMO.

Hard to say. Google is showing me 25 posts for April 11. Yours is "dated" 7:48 a.m. but showed up here just now, four hours later. On the other hand, I posted a reply and it showed up quickly.
Google is doing another very strange thing. When you look at older posts it shows you many duplicates of the postings. A 10-post thread might show up as 60 posts because everything gets repeated 6 times. I sent them a message about it, but I guess it's all part of Google Groups being a "beta" site. -aem

Right, but my newserver (zipcon.net) isn't free, it's part of my ISP. And I'm not going to waste their time by complaining until and unless I know if there's a problem, which is what I was asking about. "aem" says she's only seeing 25 posts for the day with Google, so there may not be a major issue. OTOH, I saw neither my original post in this thread, nor Phred's reply, so I'm missing something anyway. Fooey...

BTW, I love your sig! I know, JJ, my news server is with my current ISP, and my old one is with my former ISP. Neither one of them were worth a tinker's damn - they didn't propagate half the posts I could see on overseas servers. I say again - news.individual.net - I love it. YMMV.
[snip] I'm seeing 106 new articles for April 11th, as compared to 60 through Zipcon. Now I have something factual to complain to my ISP about -- thanks to everyone who replied...
At this moment Google is showing only 32 for April 11, so they are obviously lacking a lot in wherever they're getting their feed. -aem
Missing posts and non-action are what chased me away from Dirtstink.net (Earthlink).
Huh? How long ago was that? They resolved news server issues years ago and even have had E & W servers, so if one acts up - EL users can switch over (manually) to the other.

I'm glad you think they've fixed their server farm. According to multiple other sources, the same issues that were being screamed about when I was an ELN member are _still_ favorite topics within their own newsgroups.

The truth is, for an ISP, Usenet is probably a money loser. Don't expect them to exert the same resources towards fixing crummy Usenet as they would towards email or web access. Your best bet is to either hope your ISP out-sources Usenet to a company who does nothing but, or pay a company for premium Usenet access yourself.

Without a doubt maintaining servers for Usenet is a definite resource-drain. Binaries alone can kill a great feed and drain any profits from a business because of equipment requirements if not managed correctly.

But if it's advertised (and it was), some effort should be used towards maintaining it. And if it's part of the price I'm paying them [that ISP], I don't feel I should be forced to go to Supernews, Airnews, or any of the others.
I'm currently with a local ISP that is AWESOME, better than either Prodigy or ELN ever were or could hope to be. Best of all, I'm receiving every mail sent to me. I couldn't say that about either of my previous ISPs after their super-growth.

I switched last summer (cable hasn't allowed EL into their niche here), but still keep a minimum account with them just to keep my old address alive. As I said before... if one server went funky (very rarely), I switched to the other, I never experienced a poor news feed from both at the same time - and you know how much I use usenet.

Ragging on EL has been a popular sport over the years. It doesn't mean they are right or even half right, though. I'd even be willing to bet that most of the complainers are using their parents accounts! If they had autonomy, they'd stop complaining and vote with their feet just like you did.
