OT, new ISP sooo slow

That sounds like their newsservers are slow. Did you change the news server setting when you
moved ISP's?

I suspect it is their news server that is causing the slowness.

You could always use a 'Proper Newsserver' that works, AKA

<http://www.news.individual.net/>

Alternatively, seeing as there is little benefit to just downloading the headers on broadband, you
could just set your news reader (assuming it is an 'offline' reader) to download full postings then
you wouldn't have to wait.

Are you downloading the messages, or just the message headers?

At home my BB connection is 0.5 meg. It takes about 15 seconds to download 100 message headers and
about a further 60 seconds to download 100 messages, with any message over 1000 lines ignored.

Someone spilt treacle down the back of Tiscali's news server about four months ago. It just crawls
at unbearably slow speeds for about a quarter of every day, though it's not easy to predict which
quarter it might be on any given day. I've complained several times to their support staff but they
don't give a flying one about usenet - take a look at the support section of the Tiscali web site
and there's no mention of NNTP at all. The best they could come up with was something along the

We just flipped our broadband trigger here, so I'm looking forward to using that as an excuse to

That's where I read my news now. I don't use it to post, though, since they demand a 'proper' email

That's where I read my news now. I don't use it to post, though, since they demand a 'proper' email
address and I gave them one that I don't want to be spammed on. I must sort this out soon.

You don't have to post using the address you use to register with them.

They do some sort of lookup on the addresses - I think they probably check for a valid domain name
as I know people who have had posts rejected because of invalid domains, and things like using
127.0.0.1 as the IP address

I don't think that they actually check the actual address itself, and you could probably use someone
else address ok until that person complained about it.
