I have been them getting too. I use an assortment of "Norton" products (firewall, anti virus,
utilities, etc.) on my computer. It routinely catches these,deletes them, and informs me of what
steps it has taken.. It has worked well for me for the past couple of years.

I was hit by a virus one time and wound up having to reformat my hard drive in order to get rid of
it. The virus was passed on from a trusted source. From that time on I have used the software
mentioned above.

Having battled this deluge for the last few days, I am now an ardent fan of Mailwahser
(www.mailwasher.net). It deletes unwanted mail from the server before you ever download it. Very
simple interface--already has a built in filter that eliminates all the fake Microsoft bs that
flooding systems everywhere. Highly recommend it!!

You too? I get about 200 a day. They are viruses. I keep checking to see if I am infected, but I
come up clean.

I have been getting hit as well...not quite 200 a day, more like 50 a day. Someone suggested
it was the SWEN32 Worm and when I went to my McAffee Avert site..Yep that was it alright.
There is a cleaner program called the Stinger (which in XP works..sorta). You have to diable
the Restore feature and run the Stinger progra and then click Restore back on. My Virus
checker says I am clean,,,otherwise I would not be writing this here. Good idea is when you
think you have a virus...do not send messages to NGs saying you have a virus...as you may be
transporting it to the NG.

ALSo I noticed the SWEN32 is showing up AS a Message from MS in different NGs. I suspect someone at
Netscape is really ticked off that 97% pf the planet has gone to MS and wants to punish us for being
smarter than they are.

I just read what I posted...eeeek my spelling sucks. I have always looked at my keyboard as I type
and recently I have been going faster and not paying close attention or using Spell Checker.

You can pretty much be sure that MS is NOT going to send out personal emails to individual computer
users. I know a fair number of people who have been getting those types of email messages. In each
case, their email addresses are in the address book of a person who actually DOES have the virus.
Checking your computer is fine, but if people are smart, and don't open attachments from unrequested
or unknown message sources, you machine will likely be clean. The easiest thing to do is make a
temporary message rule that automatically deletes any email with the word Miscrosoft in the subject
line. A couple other things . . .

As a quick alert to know when you are or not infected with ANY type of elf propagating virus, is to
add a new entry to your address book. Add the address [email hidden] (or something similar). What
happens, is if you get a virus that sends to all the addresses in your address book, it will try to
send an email to the "aaa" address. Because that address does not exist, it will bounce and you will
get a message back from your SMTP mail server saying it was undeliverable. When you see this error
message appear in your inbox, you know you have an "email virus". If you don't get this error
message, you do not have one. Again, this only is used as a quick indicator for the presence of an
email type trojan virus and is not an indicator for other types of trojans and virii.

Also, I use 3 different A/V applications as it is not uncommon that one might have virus
inocculations/definitions that others do not. Contrary to popular perception, A/V software companies
don't like to share these things with their competitors 🙂 I have McAfee, but I also use two other
free ones. One is from www.grisoft.com which has a free version with free virus definition upgrades.
The other free one is at www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/. This one is really simple because it has
nothing to install, runs in a java applet window through your web browser, and is automatically
updated every time you use it.

I don't see how this would work. Most modern viruses send messages with fake FROM addresses. Even if
the mail is undeliverable, it won't be bounced back to you.

True enough. The only ones I've come across were ones that used your own email address when sending
the trojan messages. If it spoofs the "From" email addresses, it would in fact not work.
