I just tried the Google Groups 2 Beta today, and was generally pleased with the interface. Except for one very, very important thing: the default for replying to posts is to top post the reply with the entire original post quoted below.
This is inexcusable. Anybody who has been posting to Usenet for any amount of time knows that this is a major breach of etiquette and a sure recipe for incomprehensible threading. Evidently the engineer responsible hasn't heard the old joke:
A. Top posting.
Q. What is the most annoying thing on Usenet?
I'm begging you. Change the top posting default. It will cause strife and ruin and heartbreak. Please go to Google Groups and search on the term "Top Posting FAQ" and educate yourselves before it is too late.

Nice.
Bill "so I'm assuming it defaults in some way more difficult to overcome (UNDERcome?!?) than OE (where you just have to manually scroll to reset cursor position)?" S.

You know, there are some days when I'm really glad that AOHell has its own NewsReader, which defaults to bottom-posting, nothing quoted unless you tell it to, no headers unless you ask. Some days. ;-)

Wait a second, Gracie. How can it /both/ bottom-post AND not quote anything?!? Sounds like you still have to implement additional steps (tech term) to reply properly?
I'm using OEw/Quote-fix, which is settable to bottom post default, but that messes up my regular e-mail so I leave it at top and just scroll/trim before adding my precious gems. (Plus, if it IS a long OP, then it's too easy to just leave all the text instead of deleting extraneous stuff. Where is Wheeler lately, anyway?!? 🙂 )

Well, it quotes what and where you tell it. I suppose you _could_ top-post, or both, but it just feels more natural to do the quoting first so you have the quoted material on the same "page" when writing a reply.
Top posting. Whats that? lol... "just kidding" " Corvus Corvax " <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

This is where Xnews beats them all.... simply highlight the text you want quoted, and hit reply. A follow up window will open with only the text you highlighted quoted, and the cursor directly below it.

In AOHell, you hit reply, a new window opens, highlight what you want and hit the "quote" button, and there it is with ">" marks and all.
