i, uhh, always wave at cows as i pass. longstanding tradition that has its
roots in years of rural minnesota riding. i'm especially friendly towards
the ever agile idaho mountain cow. the ones that prefer to graze in the
middle of the fastest downhill descents.

    i don't eat 'em, either.

glad to see the chickens getting involved in the revolution, tho. esp.
    after this:

That's pretty cool. It makes me hungry for some highly processed,
    antibiotic-resistant-bacteria-infested, community destroying, big
corporation profiting, animal crueltying, polluting, big corporation
    profiting meat.

I think I'll go have a burger (burger patties bought in bulk at Wal
    Mart at prices way below anything you may trust to be real meat;
cheese bought in same place and barely identifiable as such; and
    still it's yummy!).

    I'm hungry.

KFC -- one of their suppliers' employees were just shown to be molesting
the chickens -- on film, yet. Well, not molesting in the usual sense,
but they were kicking them, ripping their heads off (anybody see Cold
Mountain?), and "breaking them in half". I don't see how that last is
    possible, but...

Update: I ate a "cheeseburger" from Burger King yesterday, but I'm
not sure if the patty in it was made from actual meat. I also had
their "chili", which was a bucket full of beans with a tiny bit of
seasoning, liquid, and maybe just a little of their "meat" mixed in.

Watched this movie the other day:

It includes footage of a turkey with it's head cut off. Headless
    poultry is cool.

    That said...

We used to be sheep farmers. I also kept chickens. One night the DH
and I were slaughtering a batch of young cockerels in the driveway, and
one of them got away from us. AFTER we beheaded it. It ran in circles
around the yard fully twice before it collapsed. Scared the living
daylights out of the cats (our Department of Rodent Control); they were
totally freaked out. We laughed so hard, we were crying, we were dying,
I thought I'd never catch a breath again.

Ah, a scene I remember well from my childhood on the farm.

Hence the midwestern idiom: "He was running around like a chicken with its
head cut off" to indicate a person who is engaging in frenetic activity
    without adequate thought.

Chili doesn't actually have to have meat, but if it claims to it ought
to at least make it recognizable -- maybe with little labels or
something. I've never liked Burger King stuff, but Carl's Jr. is OK.

There's a lot of stuff on the web about a headless chicken who lived for
months/years after having its head cut off. I think they fed it by
stuffing food down its neck somehow, but it's apparently real, not some
sort of backwoods hoax. Now THAT'S creepy.

Thanks ever so much. I now know far more than might be useful about the
proper way to kill a whole lot of chickens at one time. They CLAIM
there's no respiratory distress with argon, but WTF do they know? Did
they ever ASK one of the chickens? NOOOOOOO!

That was "Tough Tom" back around 1950 or thereabouts. It was real.
Some one cut off the top part of his head and missed the part of his
brain that controls the autonomic functions. The bird stayed alive
for more than a few months and finally died from lack of care. What
really happened is that skin grew over his windpipe and he died from
    lack of Oxygen.
About the KFC crew, that may well have been in Clarksville, Arkanas.
My father retired there and when I went to visit I got a job in the
local chicken plant for one day just to see how they did it.
The entire plant was committed full time to KFC.
The incoming birds were just grabbed by the neck and twisted, which
would have been enough. The employees were the counties finest high
school dropouts. For fun they would have 'Chicken [censored] fights',
holding the dead birds and squeezing as hard as they could to expel
the nasty stuff at each other.
Sanitation?? Yeah, right. Think about it when you go out for chicken.

  18. Something different about cows.
I was out riding past a pasture on Tuesday and a group of cows that
was next to the road decided I was a threat. The entire group
started running, not away from me but along the fence in front of me.
I paced them at about 13mph and they only had the sense to turn
when they were faced with a creek in front of them.
Not the brightest creatures on Earth, but I like milk.
Auto authenticate is on. (Note to myself).

  19. Old subject but I thought some might relate to this.
On one particular route that I take there is a farm with 2 dogs
that are not leashed or fenced in. The first few times I went
past this farm I just sped up. Then I had a huge headwind and
had to stop and face the dogs. After a few minutes they approached
close enough to touch, so I figured "What the heck." and tried
petting one. After a minute of wondering what was going on the
other came up to me and after a few doggie sniffs I was petting
him too. Now I have a different kind of problem in that every
time I pass this farm they come running up to me and
EXPECT to get some attention so I stop and oblige.
At least I know they are not interested in actually biting.

Many dogs are bluffing. That said, of course, you can never tell which
    ones those are.

Last time a dog chased me, it was some mop-like creature. I popped it
on the nose with the sole of my riding shoe; that stopped it dead in its
    tracks for some reason.
