OT: Iced Tea Flood

I was up very early on Saturday morning, so by mid-morning was ready for a
sandwich. I also poured a large 24 oz. glass of iced tea and headed back
to the computer. Smelling the sandwich, our newest feline addition, Popie,
bounded up to the desktop. Although quite young, Popie is a very large
lanky cat who tends to spread her long body out as far as she can. She
also has a sometimes annoying habit of playing with anything in sight,
knocking pens, clips and anything else onto the floor. Well, this time she
took a sweeping blow against the glass of iced tea, sending it reeling and
spilling all over the keyboard, instantly putting it out of commission! I
grabbed a few towels to soak up the flood, then turned my attention to the
keyboard. I removed the case, then drained and lightly rinsed off the tea
(it was already thoroughly soaked), patted it dry, then used a blow dryer
to finish off. Still, about half the keys were non-functional. Well, no
keying for me for the time being. Too busy the rest of Saturday, but
headed over to Fry's Electronics on Sunday morning for a new keyboard. I
hate going there! I'm always too tempted to pick up something I don't
really need. I succumbed. They had an HP Officjet 5500 3-in-one
printer/copier/fax for $129. Nice quality print and a real bonus document
feeder that will handle 20 originals that works for copying and scanning.
I had to thank Popie for that one!

Yes I've been eyeing a new DVD Burner, a USB hard drive transport and
another gig of memory...But a 3 in 1 printer/fax/scanner is what I really
need, if it's a laser printer. I hate those 40 dollar ink catridges....

Wayne, I've got a cat with the same annoying habit of knocking things off
desks, dressers, the bathroom counter (namely my contacts' case!). I've
learned to keep beverages away and put things up high. It's worse than
baby-proofing a house! So, yeah, I can relate. :~) Good score on the
3-in-one!

of iced tea would prevent me from going to Fry's due to the necessity

Well, it is an inkjet, but I prefer ink over laser for color. These
cartridges are less, however. I can get a twin-pack of the black for
$25.00 and a single color for $20.00. My old HP printer used the 40 dollar
cartridges.

Wayne, is that a printer with separate print heads? If so, take it back.
The print heads don't last long and are considered a consumable and cost
about $38 (x4) each. I just replaced a 2 yo HP all-in-one that had separate
print heads rather than spend the money on new heads. The new design HP's
have gone back to the print cartridges that have the print heads in them. I
also found the 2 yo HP gobbled ink--I used more than twice as much ink as my
previous HP. The new printers/all-in-ones with the Vivera ink are more
efficient users of ink. All I've ever had were HP printers and I was really
disappointed about the cost of use in my 2 yo all-in-one.

Although there are 4 print heads, there are only 2 cartridges--black and
color. There is no obvious difference in packaging or advertising. The
ink cartridges look the same. The only way you would know is if you asked
at the store or if you had to install printheads when you were setting up
your new machine. The color started going funky within a year and we limped
along for another year until more heads went out. Many of the
attractively-priced HP machines are priced that way to get rid of that
stock.

Those prices for cartridges are comparable to what I can get at Costco.

I have a Canon Multipass F50 with separate ink tanks and an old HP (that
finally crapped out after some very hard use for years). As a lark, I
bought a refill kit at Costco maybe a year ago. It was cheap and I
wanted to see if it could be done without a major hassle. At the time, I
was buying inks online with good results. It was playtime with the
refills. Label says "IMS Ink Refill System" <www.ims-ink.com>

I've filled the black tank six times and the colors twice each. My
fingers had some interesting colors a couple times until I figured out
how to do it. The last few times, it's worked very smoothly and took
about five minutes to do a tank from start to putting it back into the
printer.

I don't know what long-term effects the refill ink will have on the
head, if any, but thus far, it's worked very well.

Ocassionally the cartridge gets plugged and you need to buy a new one.
Butter sometimes helps to remove the ink stains from your fingers.

I have never bought a refill kit. However, near my office is a cartridge
place that sells originals as well as refilled trade-ins and at substantial
savings. I bought refills for two of my printers once. The colors were
surprisingly different hues than original cartridges. Never went back.
