April 26, 2004 Priest Arrested in 1980 Killing of Toledo Nun
    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

TOLEDO, Ohio, April 25 (AP) — A Roman Catholic priest
has been charged in the 1980 killing of a nun whose body
was found in the chapel of the hospital where he served
    as chaplain.

The priest, the Rev. Gerald Robinson, 63, was arrested
Friday, five months after the police reopened the
investigation into the death of Sister Margaret Ann Pahl,
said Chief Mike Navarre of the Toledo police.

Sister Pahl, 71, was stabbed about 30 times and strangled on
April 5, 1980. Her body was found in the chapel of Mercy
Hospital here, surrounded by candles with her arms folded
across her chest. She was the caretaker of the chapel.

Investigators re-examined the killing after another woman
said she had been abused by Roman Catholic priests during
Satanic and sadomasochistic rituals, The Toledo Blade
    reported on Sunday.

Investigators said that they could not substantiate the
woman's accusations but that her mention of Father Robinson
prompted the police to take another look at the nun's
killing, in which he had always been a suspect.

The authorities said the killing was part of a "ceremony" in
the chapel. They would not elaborate, except to say the
    killer acted alone.

    activity.

Father Robinson performed the funeral for Sister Pahl.

Investigators said they concluded that the murder
weapon, which they did not identify, was "in the control
of the suspect." They employed a rarely used technique
that analyzes the patterns made when an item is laid
down, but DNA evidence was not a factor, Detective Steve
    Forrester said.

On Saturday, Father Robinson's lawyer, John Thebes,
questioned the strength of the new evidence in the
    murder case.

"There's a reason these cases are cold and sit for 24
years because the evidence is not good to begin with," Mr.
    Thebes said.

The Rev. Michael Billian, spokesman for the 19-county
Diocese of Toledo, did not immediately return a call seeking
    comment Sunday.

All I can think of is how the people who were married by
this guy must feel. And then there is the issue of
confession. I mean, here we have people telling this guy
they took the Lord's name in vain, or yanked their crank,
while he sits there knowing what he (allegedly) did back in
1980. We won't even go into the Sacraments.

Why should they feel anything? His unworthiness to celebrate
the sacraments affects only him and his immortal soul, it
doesn't affect the sacraments he celebrated. The priest who
celebrated our marriage and baptized our first two children
was gay, not celibate and most likely the first patient to
die of AIDS in our town (the lesions I saw just before he
died I today recognize as probably Karposi Sarcoma, but in
1985 who knew). Does that affect anything about my marriage
or my children's baptism? No, and it doesn't make me feel
anything one way or another for me. I do feel sadness that
he was an unhappy, mixed-up individual who was unable to
live up to his promise of celibacy.

You already have AFA the RC Church is concerned: marriage &
confession. There are 3 more he likely celebrated:
Eucharist, Baptism & Sacrament of the Sick. He may have also
    celebrated Confirmation.

Poorly worded on my part. Have to excuse me. Lutheran & all.
I was referring to the Eucharist, and Last Rites, things of
that nature. Seems somehow wrong that this guy should be
offering intercession. when his own soul may be as black as
they come with unconfessed, unrepented sin.

Please forgive my incomplete understanding of the Catholic
faith. However, I am sure I would feel the same way if the
guy was a Lutheran minister, or a Baptist, or a Rabbi, for
    that matter.

'sacrament of the sick' i've not heard of. is that the same
as 'the extreme unction' a.k.a. 'last rites,' but which i
last heard referred to as 'the anointing of the sick'? (i'm
as lapsed as a lapsed catholic can possibly be, but a priest
came by the hospital to lay one on me, summoned by my dad. i
gave dad some [censored] about it later - he's as much an atheist
as i am - and he said, 'i thought that would wake you up if
    anything would.'

    couldn't hoit, i suppose.

one of the reasons i stopped being a catholic is that i
didn't like the fact that you seemed to need an
'intercessor' to talk to god. but it seems to me that god
shouldn't care if your spokesperson was a blackheart, as
long as you were sincere. and He knows there have been
corrupt clergymen almost since it all began. i think you'd
have to ascribe some kind of sin to judas.

Yes, Sacrament of the Sick and Extreme Unction are the same
thing. The difference is in the understanding of the
sacrament. The person receiving it should ideally be able to
participate in the prayers, etc. When it was called 'Last
Rites/Extreme Unction' the priest would be called when the
person was about to draw his/her last breath, usually
unconscious, and totally unable to participate. The idea of
having this sacrament administered was frightening because
it meant you were dying. Today, the name change and the
emphasis put on 'serious illness' rather than 'being at
death's door' allows people to ask to receive this sacrament
at a time when it may help them physically as well as
emotionally. It is a great comfort for those who have faith.
Helps even those who don't have faith since it seems to have
    worked for you. ;o)
