Breaking free of Hotmail
October 2nd, 2004
Soon, million of Hotmail users will lose the ability to access
their email through Outlook and Outlook Express ... unless they pay a
subscription.
After that point, Hotmail will effectively lock-in their users so that they
may only use the web browser interface, making it difficult to migrate
their messages should they decide in the future that they'd like to use
a competing service.
There is a way out for Hotmail users who don't want to pay for the WebDAV
service that permits the use of clients, but they'll have to act quickly.
They can transfer all their Hotmail accounts to the free FastMail.FM
email service - described by the Sydney Morning Herald as "faster and
far superior to Hotmail on every level". Fastmail provides a migration
facility (see http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/hotmailmigrate.html)
that gives users freedom of choice over their email preferences. And there are
several bonuses:
* Faster than Hotmail
* No advertisments
* 10MB of storage free
* Synchronized with your favorite email program (Outlook, Mozilla,
Eudora, etc...)
* Option for paid upgrades to get personal support, your own domain
name, 2GB of space, and much more
FastMail.FM is a fast-growing worldwide web-based IMAP email application with
none of the advertising and spam problems associated with other typical
web-based email applications. FastMail.FM also announced today increases to
storage limits for all accounts, with the flagship 'Enhanced' account getting
2GB email and 250MB file storage.
