  1. My teenage son's 94 ford escort is acting up..

the air conditioner went completly out along with all the winshield wipers..

it only has 36,000 miles on it..

i had a new air conditoner put in 2 years ago..

its odd that both things are completly dead.

sorry for the post I don't know of any ford boards and I'm short on
funds..called dealers they just want 90.00 just to look at car...

    thanks!
    ann

  2. The A/C is probably not needed -- many people never use A/C -- as for
the windshield wipers, try tracing the problem with a multimeter. Could
be a blown fuse on the fuse board.

Many certified mechanics can do the same work as dealers for less money.

  4. that stinks don't it?

As far as the AC, roll the windows down for now and that should be ok, until
money is saved to fix it.

The wipers stopped? LOL I can laugh here. The van I drove for nearly 10
years has wipers that don't work and I was told that even a salvage motor
for them would cost about 100.00, that is for motor alone. They went out at
a time when I had $0.00. I managed to scrape up a few bucks and got a
bottle of Rain X and just applied it to windshield every month or more often
if a rainy season. (Granted if you live in state with car inspection
station you will need wipers) but that might a cheap way to see and drive
until you can afford to get it fixed properly.

Also, have you check fuses? That may be the problem

If they are too short of funds to pay the dealer $90 to look at the car they
are unlikely to want to buy a new one! :-)

I'd say take it to a trustworthy mechanic to look at. AC not working is hard
in hot summer weather, but one can live without it if necessary. Wipers are
a little more essential. If you don't know a mechanic one place you can
check is at the Cartalk site where loyal listeners have nominated
trustworthy mechanics they have dealt with. Go to
http://www.cartalk.com/content/mechx/index.html and check for a mechanic in
    your area.

  7. I guess I'm in a different part of the world than some of the other
posters. Here in south Louisiana air conditioners are a necessity ! If you
had it replaced 2 years ago it should still be warranted. Just had mine
replaced and was told it had a lifetime warranty.Shouldn't be a charge to
look at it if you take it to the people who replaced it.

I bought this car new in 94..

I will never buy a ford again.

like I said it has low miles and so far put in
    new water pump,new air conditioner,new brakes,radio went..etc.

If I could afford a NEW CAR i would get one..Its a shame for this low milege.

I CAN live with out air in the florida heat BUT the wipers are important..

    will buy the Rain X...lol

    Thanks again,

Ju puzzled both things went at once?

I had a 98 Escort for over 5 years and finally gave it to my dad in June
(his old car died and they needed another vehicle). It is in excellent
running condition and has about 130,000 miles on it. Never had any major
problems with it - except the air conditionor would suck small bits of
debris from outside (average person could not get to it to clear it out) and
then the AC would drip inside the car. Had to have something called the
accumulator replaced. Not all Escorts are [censored]. You can get a bad car in
any model or you may get one that never has any problems in its lifetime.

I drove a 91 Escort for 130,000 miles (traded it in last year, after 12
years of ownership). It held up wonderfully, but, as cars get older,
stuff needs to be replaced, regardless of the number of miles.

My '93 Tracer (a Mercury-badged Escort) has nearly 140,000 miles and
my daughter is still driving it. It's needed some major work, but
it's still cheaper than making payments on a different used car, which
would also need work now and then.

Yes, it is. But not everyone lives in a city where they can walk to work or
school, or where public transportation is available.

    Well, not me!!
It's 96 degrees today with a heat index of 104. Humidity is 86%.
    Overnight temp was 76. Unbelievable.
I can't even imagine not having an air-conditioned car.

I bought this car new in 94..

36K on a ten-yr-old car is very unusual...lots of things can go wrong with a
car if it isn't used frequently (the

But it's TEN years old...low mileage or not, the car and its parts are
OLD. I think it's to be expected - although as someone else
suggested, check to see if the new a/c is still under warranty.
