OT. Help me solve my computer problem.Pleeeeeez

Dont take this the wrong way but have you tried asking in the relevant newsgroups for computers and
whatnot? (No idea what they are called but I bet they are there)

Not taking it wrong. I ask people on this group because I feel like part of the recumbent family. A
family that talks about lots of OT stuff. Anyway,I know lots of my fellow benters are computer whiz
bangs and thats why I asked on this news group first. If no one can help I'll seek out the other
groups and I will keep to bent related posts on ARBR

No, no. My point just was that on a computer newsgroup there will be more whiz bangs than here so
you might get an answer faster. Sounds frustrating. Actually it also sounds like that virus. McAfee
had a free detection and removal tool AFAIK.

Nah, it's not a virus.

I'm guessing the modem is a plug-in card rather than built into the motherboard. Did it ever work
correctly - i.e. was it recognized at power-up until recently? If it used to work, what changed
(have you added or removed other devices)?

See if the modem manufacturer has a newer driver.

Thanx Jim H: yes it is a plug in card and it started messing up when I installed Micro softs Works
7.0. The card/modem worked fine before. Now at power up it is not recognized .Will check on a
newer driver.By the way I also just up graded to Win XP. Before XP my system was WIN 98 and the
WORKS 7.0 was rubbing on it with no problems. Guess there was a conflict with WORKS and XP ANYWAY

God, I am certainly not a computer whiz but it sounds as though it is a port problem. Perhaps MS
Works selects a port for faxing or such and it was the port originally selected by the modem.

I use Win 98SE, not familiar with XP. Is there a way to check for software and hardware
conflicts with XP?

Hi Bill, Hope people don't mind me butting in as I'm new to the NG!

Can we have a few facts please. Make and model of modem? Driver version? Did the problems start with
XP? Have you looked on the manufactorers web site for FAQs etc?

From what you say, it sounds like it's either an ancient modem, in which case scrap it and get a XP
compatable one (maybe £30 - $45), or just needs the latest drivers/firmware which will be available
from the web site.
