  1. Hello All:

Every time I ride in the canyons around here I see lots of Harely riders (so this in on topic after
all). I had trouble understanding what they got out of riding a motorbike with no mufflers but now I
    think I understand.

    Cheers,

    Jim

At a press conference late Monday, the CEO of Johnson Marine, makers of Johnson outboard marine
engines and other recreational equipment, unveiled a new line of heavyweight cruiser-style
motorcycles designed to compete head-to-head with industry leader Harley-Davidson.

Peter Long, Johnson's brands marketing manager said, "We have studied the market and determined that
H-D, while highly successful, has narrowly missed the mark when targeting motorcycle buyers". Long
added, "We at Johnson are convinced that our product hits the target dead center and promises to
draw sales away from Harley-Davidson in a way no other motorcycle has been able to accomplish".

The new line of bikes, marketed under the name Big Johnson Motorcycles, will, according to Long,
deliver what Harley has only promised. "Our research shows that this, a Big Johnson, is what Harley
buyers are really after". At the unveiling of the new line, several current Harley owners agreed.
"When I bought my Harley, what I really needed was a Big Johnson," said one Harley owner." But I see
now that riding a Harley is no replacement for having a Big Johnson."

Manager Long also said that his company would follow the lead of Harley-Davidson and cash in on a
huge market for non-motorcycle related products. "We realize that not every guy can have a Big
Johnson," said Long, "But image is very important to people. If they don't have a Big Johnson, they
at least want to project the image of having one."

Asked if he anticipated Big Johnsons showing up in the hands of Harley owners, Long said it was
unlikely. "I just don't see the need to have a Harley if you have a Big Johnson," he said. "And
I can't imagine someone who spends all their resources to acquire a Harley having a Big
Johnson. I think it boils down to this - You either have a Harley, or you have a Big Johnson,
but you are not likely to have both." "Given the choice," said Long, "I think most guys will
    opt for the Big Johnson."

Another force driving sales for the company will come from women. A survey of the wives and
girlfriends of nearly 1,000 potential motorcycle buyers indicates less than 5% would approve of
their partner spending $15,000 on a Harley Davidson. But, when asked if they would be willing to pay
the same amount of money to get their partner a Big Johnson, nearly 4 out 5 thought that would be
    money well spent.

Big Johnson Motorcycles will be traded on the New York stock exchange under the abbreviation PNSNV.

Beautiful...in a pitiful sort of way and further proof that these guys really want something big

Harley riding is essentially middle aged Fatties desperately attempting anything to make that

The most common excuse I have heard from the lips of these dudes is that they need to be loud to
    avoid getting hit by cars.

    Hmm.

Not that I haven't intensely enjoyed all of the Harley comments, but I have to interject that I
spent a lot more time on the side of the road fixing my Bianchi Campione D'Italia than I ever did my
Harley Fat Boy. Of course, not having much of a clue on how to work on either of them at the time
could have been a factor... :-) My current concern is whether my bicycle and motorcycle can continue
to co-exist peacefully if I switch to a Big Johnson - I suspect some modifications on the Bianchi
    might be required :-).

    Cheers,

    Scott..

Speaking of bike riders riding motos, I really like the small to medium size bikes. The first bike I
ever rode was a Honda 350/4 which was a very sweet machine for its time. It was the perfect size for
me. That was what I had in the US. In Europe I had a 100 cc bike that had a 5 speed transmission. It
was very small but handled reasonably close to bike and the gas seemed to last forever. Gas over
there was about $4 a gallon. My dream bike would be a bike that handled like the small one but with
the power of the big(ger) one. I do not understand the trend of the HUGE motors. I always did put
handling very high on the list for all vehicles. Anyhow, with most of my time spent on bikes and
those two motos I really could not stand those big motorcycles with maybe 2 cylinders of about
500cc. I could never get used to the handling and the sound just made things worse. Maybe if I took
one on a big tour, that would be a different story but I never did that.

I see your point about the stealth. Now this is an even bigger mystery to
me. It must be one of those subculture things where nobody really knows why but everyone thinks they
    need to do it.

  14. What do Harley riders have in common with their bikes?

They're slow, overweight, loud, unreliable, and tend to smoke a lot.

(I ride a Yamaha R1, so to me Harleys are slow and overweight)

on Hwy 129 a lot (220 turns in 11 miles, three significant climbs/descents, 2 wheel playground,
world renowned motorcycle paradise). On my bicycle. I have seen three accidents on 129, all of em
were fat people (2 guys, one girl) on huge bikes. The Harley guys get in the way of the crotch
rockets, and make ridiculous amounts of noise. The terrain is sublime, down near the NC border, but
the loud ass Harleys ruin it, since you can hear them 4 miles up the canyon. Here's the thing,
though. The guys on the CBRs and Ducatis and GSXRs wave and give us cyclists a thumbs up. The Harley
guys ignore us. Their machismo is offended by us pansy ass rubber pants wearin girly men, but the

Those "Harley Guys" who are ignoring you these days are probaly a tax accountant and a personal
injury lawyer. I Got out of the "Motor Company" game after I got sick of the pretenders, and the
"New Corporate Attitude". I quit riding them, I still build a few bikes here and there and since my
specialty was Early Model stuff-Pre Shovelhead I'm not real impressed with anything other than the
seemingly never ending record profits they are generating. Though the newer bikes are a pretty
decent piece of engineering for the design restrictions imposed on them by the styling/tradition
restrictions. The ones without mufflers, usually short drag pipes, and if they have too much money,
stroked, with an oversize S&S carb is about the worst possible combination of parts you could come
up with from a performance standpoint. It is the "COOL" thing to do though. At the shop we used to
love the "Easyriders Tech Tips" because they generated so much business for us. Bill C

Actually, the Harley dudes don't give us sport bike guys a wave either. They have their own little
sub-culture. It's sort of a little code that sport bike guys always give a wave when passing the
other way, perhaps OUR little sub-culture. In any event, the two don't associate at all. In general,
there are 3 classes of Harley riders: wealthy younger guys with open pipes, shorty helmets, a
Cadillac Escalade and Oakley Irridium glasses that they wear even at midnight, wealthy older guys
going through mid-life crises who feel the need to belong to SOME group other than the corporate rat
pool and hard-core bike gang members who are by far the best of the bunch despite their questionable
background. I'd stop and give a gang-member a hand if his bike broke down because I get the feeling
they'd do the same for me despite my CBR. The two former groups wouldn't give a rat's ass. BMW
riders are somewhere in between, between both worlds...

As an aside, a motorcycle racer friend of mine was given a Honda VTX1800 (Harley wanna-be) to
ride for a week or two. He noticed that sport bike guys would wave to him and he'd wave
back...after a few days he started giving them the finger, just to "fit in with the other
    dumb-ass Harley guys". Heehee..

    Cheers,

    Scott..

You know, I don't want to seem completely anti-Harley (like you say, they have some great
history..the old, classic nailhead and shovelhead motors etc.), but the engines they are using are
basically 75 years old!! Imagine buying a new car with a flathead v8 in it! You'd be out of business
in no time. But somehow, Harley pulls it off by selling an image. I'm an engine nut, but I really
can't stand a Harley with open pipes..it's just noise. Kinda like a farm tractor...
