Like em, what do you shoot with? Im terrified of smashing a camera when im
out in the hills and usually take single use cameras.

Discovered this place while doing a search on Google Groups for info on

I carry a camera in a padded case suspended from the waistband of my
rucksack, so that I can get at it quickly. Lowepro do some good ones,
and also CCS. If the camera was very large then that probably wouldn't
work.

They're taken on a variety of cameras, the older ones (the wing walker &
rally car) are scans from slides taken on my trusty old Canon A1 (still
probably the best 35mm film camera in the world, ah... Canon FD
lenses..... if I dared to post that on rec.photo.digital I'd be looking
for my kneecaps).

The Mermaid, mostly black abstract splodge and carving are taken on my
Canon EOS 300 D, if you haven't guessed the black one owes more to
Paintshop than any camera.

The rest are taken on my hillwalking camera, an Olympus C4000Z. I've
never had too much trouble with cameras in the hills, even when
scrambling. I keep it in a pouch on my waist belt, if it rains I zip the
Grotex over the top of it, or put it in a rucksac.

Knoydart, eh? Now that's a place I long to get to. It's a bit much for a
weekend though, and the thought of asking She Who Must Be Obeyed if she
fancies a few days wandering in a midge infested wilderness miles from
the nearest road turns even me pale. Did you see Muriel Gray's Munro
Show on Knoydart?

I used to do that with my Olympus C-740, but since I got the mju-410
compact I carry it in the hipbelt pocket on my Osprey rucksack. This is
such a great feature, I am surprised more rucksacks don't have them.

Do you mean by that the one of the west range of Fountains? I think
it's amazing. It seems to me to have the feel of a reproduction of an
old painting or drawing.

No, that one was taken on the Olympus, although it was Paintshopped to
convert the colour image to B & W. It didn't look too good in colour
because the light streaming in through the windows had completely blown
the highlights, and the cameras small built in flash hadn't improved
matters much at close quarters. It improved greatly in B & W, though I
think architecture and people often do photograph better in monochrome.

There's probably a moral here: if you've got a rather c**p colour photo
convert it to B & W and have another try!

I hadn't been in the hills for years and despite empty threats from a mate
that I was in the Wormit BBs with we never got round to heading back into
the hills while at Uni.

BB Hiking was generally a bit mad to start with a dash over a hill in the
Sidlaws and various other day long dashes in Glen Clova from the St Andrews
BB Cottage.

Never bothered to complete DoE Bronze but our hike was in the Lomonds, 3 of
us, with the first day finishing with me and one other doing the whole route

were local polis) and finishing the route for the other guy on the monks
path to Balmerino Abbey.

Also started a Hike from Aviemore to Invereythrough the Lairig Ghru on day

stopping at corrour bothy that we walked down the road until we met the cars
:-(

Gap of 6 or so years

Got back into it when in a pub the night before some mates headed to
Ambleside and Scafel Pike
Great fun that was, under equiped, under nourished and a missjudgment in the
steepness of our descent back to the Hardknott Pass at Dusk, restarted my
interest.
The fact we started from the Hardknott Pass at Boot was down to me pointing
out that those little white lines are roads and that the Place "Cattle Grid"
was in fact an instrument on the road to stop sheep wandering too far!
Pity i didn't have a map as one of the guys spontaneously decided he wanted
to scramble over Scafel and meet us at the Summit of Scafel Pike. So while
we got to the top of the waterfall the climbers on scaffel seemed a bit
bothered about the guy trying to get down without a rope :-S

Didn't get any more in until last year when we headed for Corrour
