I think a home half-the-size we're in now would be just the ticket to
encourage us to throw out 'stuff ' faster. I'd like to live where we are
now with half the stuff, but I've got a DH that needs lots of persuasion.
We took an old sewing machine to the Salvation Army and a box of books and a
box of DVD's to the library today. I've made a vow to do this everytime we
go to town. But, we've got a long ways to go, we have an attic!
I love that TV show where they have to get rid of their stuff -- I can
really relate to it.

A lot of people retire to smaller quarters only to discover that when
they stop working they find that they are at home many more hours (the
walls will close in on you) and develop many more projects that require
lots of space. I retired to a house about a third larger than I lived
in while working... I'm very, very glad I did, in fact I sometimes
think I should have chosen a house with double the space... but
fortunately this property included a small (900 sf)guest/rental house
plus detached one car garage and heated lean-to shed (which I don't
rent) and recently bit by bit I've begun to take it over with my
projects. The heated shed has become a small workshop for grinding
etc., the garage has become my gardening shed (it's pretty much full)
and I've already made the largest bedroom in the house my art studio
for my watercolor painting. That house also of course has a decent
sized kitchen (10x15)... and every once in a while I consider a small
bake shop just to supply bread to the locals... there isn't a decent
loaf to be had here for many miles. Then I wake up from my reverie and
realize how I have more than enough to keep busy. But just from this
kitchen and a couple of ovens in the second bedroom I can easly produce
a hundred loaves of good sour dough Jewish rye every day. And there's
a third bedroom that'll hold two more ovens where I can bake a thousand
kiaser rolls a day... the local restaurants would snap up all I can
produce But then I'd not have any time for all my other endeavers.
Any young person with ambition/motivation, and ain't ascared to sweat
12 hour days, could make a lot of money moving to a rural area and
opening a bake shop, that's if they don't pruduce the usual hillybilly
[censored].

Anyways, I got off track... anyone planning to retire do not, I repeat,
DO NOT retire to smaller quarters... you'll be very sorry.

I never have a problem with too many lids... they disappear quickly.
I have too many bottoms. Tupperware, Glad... you name it. The tops
go missing immediately.

Emptying her house was a painful lesson well learned.

When we retired,
we shed some 75% of our "stuff",
and move to a small 2 bedroom place.

A year later, we haven't missed any of it.
( except my favorite omelet pan which got lost in the shuffle )

I'm NOT saying this from experience, because I've been in my home for
30 years and have no plan to move.... but it seems like the best part
of moving is that after you cull eveything you think won't be suitable
for your new digs - there is even more that isn't appropriate.

I remember when a friend moved from SF to Raleigh NC many years
ago.... her furniture was classic (with a capital C) traditional
English, so you'd think it would have fit in nicely with her new
surroundings. However, after the move she told me she should have
sold all her furniture (except for family antiques), saved the cost of
moving it and bought new because her old furniture wasn't "right" for
the area.

I used to go to 'auctions' and I've often said the same thing, "instead of
hauling this furniture around (five houses owned in 20 years), that I should
furnish the new house with auction items," but I was too attached to it
all. Now that it is basically used up, except for the family antiques,
none of it really matters. Yes, live and learn.

Hehe. My Mom and sister are in that process. Heading down to the old
house this weekend to try and sort and pack the rest of the trash.
Mom's house was 8 rooms/3 baths. (Old rooming house). Sis's apartment
is 5 rooms/1 bath.

Good luck. And take some time every day to enjoy being retired. Then
get back to work sorting!

Good luck. We moved into a rental while we're waiting for our house
remodel to be finished and a sizable portion of my kitchen stuff is
under our bed and the guest room bed. I love it when I have to get
down on my hands and knees to find my Dutch oven, trifle dish or
waffle maker :-)
