i like mailwasher for its ability to pick up and learn the
viruses...... possible virus OR virus will show if i try to
preview the message...... or i can wait a min after the
messages download and it will tell me what is virus material

i typically just mass delete the mail from people i don't
know and click process so mailwasher doesn't even get that
far a lot of days

still a handy program to have around...... delete the e-mail
and virus at your ISP's server

That raises an interesting point. I can see that Norton
AV does a

complete check of all drives here each morning and checks
all incoming material

I did actually get the Netsky virus once and it disabled
Norton by not allowing me to do live update. This is the
portion it disabled. I could not then update my AV to get
the files that would protect me from Netsky. It took me
about 2 hours to download and install the removal tool for
Netsky. Since then, I've learned to do updates not just
daily, but prior to each time I access my e-mail.

The symptoms I have personally seen are when initialising a
virus checker causes the PC to freeze or reboot; unable to
run liveupdate (or update the definitions); error message
when the virus checker tries to run. Any of these is a
definite sign of a virus, however I read that a virus can
stop the checker from detecting viruses - I have not
confirmed that one from personal experience.

Most worms are not restricted to e-mail address books
anymore: they harvest any address they can get, say from
your Internet cache files as well. Web pages with e-mail

You could use a text based e-mail program (to not trigger
the payload, if any, and wipe them from the server without
slurping them in), look at the headers of a few of them,
and determine which IP-address they originated from. Mostly

in Romania or the Fiji Islands, the virus laden mails
bounce and are returned to you.

subscriber do do a virus check, but also send a complaint
to those annoying ISP twits sending bounce messages. You
should tell them not to overload the network with delivery
messages for spoofed messages, but wipe them without
further notice. But, that's just my opinion..... 😉

I already use Mailwasher, but it only allows one addy now.
Unfortunately, I downloaded the latest version and lost the
ability to check several addys. But I do get rid of 15-30

So it only checks my old ozconnect address, and I use the
ISP's spamfilter for the new one. I still get the occasional
real message on the old one.

Maybe I'll just have to make the supreme effort and pay
for it like I did for Forte. I hate spending money on
software :-)
