no not socks. STOCKS. I just opened an account with an online brokerage comapny(which I probably should have done more than a few years ago, but oh well) and now I am wondering about cycling and bike related stocks. I know of Dorel Industries (owns Pacific) does anyone know of other bike publicly traded stocks? Thanks.

Shimano [SHMDF] is publicly traded, and it's a good general bet on the bicycle industry BUT It's a Japanese stock and listed only on Japanese exchanges. I bought some last year and my online brokerage firm tacked on a bunch of additional commissions to the purchase, and informed me that there would be a nontrivial annual holding fee. I got the additional commissions reversed (because they were unable to cite justification from them in their own fee schedule!) but decided to sell because of the holding fee. I did make a small profit. My point about this is to check before you buy a foreign stock. Some are trivial to own (Shell, BP, etc.) but others are a big pain. At the time, I looked and Dorel and it didn't look interesting, but that was then.

After a quick perusal, another BUT is that it is a very illiquid stock. The average share volume shows as 100 shares. If you do want to sell you might have trouble finding a buyer.

Also be aware of currency risk, regional risk and sector risk.

Those are ADR corporations [American Depository Receipts] which makes trading them as easy and cheap as trading US equities.
Energy has been my biggest hedge play for bikers for several years. Still is a good sector along with gold. The ETF's have less volatility. Individual stocks have more gains and more losses and you should have more experience. Hurricanes and terrorists will never disappear The US side has more downside so I would not be buying them.

My initial purchase was evergreen solar (eslr) because I read that they signed a $200 million contract, then two days later announced 2q loss. Stock has been in a downward trend since then. But I'm not getting out just yet. I still think solar is a up and coming trend. Particularly with the world increase in oil usage and the price of oil.

Yep, time to buy more if you like it. PEIX is an ethanol etf which Bill Gates is a big part of. try a look at creststreet power and income fund CRS.un-tsx 11% yield to keep you holding on.

Nelson Rockefeller is said to have commented that he knew it was time to get out of the stock market in the late 1920's when shoe shine boys starting giving 'hot stock tips'.
The modern iteration is the Cocktail Real Estate Threshold: When everyone at a generic cocktail party is relating their latest real estate flip it's a sign the market is topping.
In this context it seems like when even bicycle group denizens are touting energy stocks it might be time to exit that market.

Funny you mention this: A guy I work with was just telling me about his last "FLIP" I had to keep myself from laughing out loud.

Well solar is an alternative energy stock, not quite the same as say "big oil" or coal fired energy companies. In my opinion anyway. Take it for what it is worth(not much at all).

Yeah, like there is always more money to be made in a savings account? They also say the smartest people in the world are the poorest. Make out of that what you will. I have been in energy stocks since 2001 like I already said. Alternative energy stocks have always from some curious reason not been popular and therefore not profitable. Found that out the hard way. Most likely because not until this year did the US think there was an energy crisis. So cause the world is too stupid yes you can lose the ranch. If oil prices stay, lose or go higher energy co.'s will be making money. .. senile denizens or not You cannot paint the whole market with one brush like you do

I was not painting a 'whole market'. I did not use the word senile. I _did_ include a smiley. And while I understand that given the heated exchange you had over freezing plastic you might be sensitive to flamage, please don't take it that way. Though a valid observation it was meant to be taken in good humour.

Did anybody watch the news last night? Enronn reported a record quarter with over $10 billion profits, yes, folks, that is for one quarter. We who need gas get hurt paying for it and the shareholders get richer than ever. If they had to take diminished profits then we might be seeing gas at $2.50 instead of $3.00+. Those [censored] at the top sure as Hell aren't hurting and I don't think they want the war in Iraq to end anytime soon. No wonder they vote Repuglican. Bill Baka

Bill did you mean EXXON? I think ENRON is dead.
Ken
'scuse me. I was half asleep and don't play oil stocks anyway. I stand humbly corrected in my lack of 'give a [censored]' about oil companies or stock. Bill Baka

I figured that is what you meant. Just making sure though. Thought maybe you knew something I didn't.

It gets dumber and dumber. Billy, have you heard about the huge world wide demand for energy? Gasoline, you little crybaby, is not the majority of world fossil fuel energy use.
